An FDA panel of experts has confirmed earlier findings that Avastin is neither efficient nor safe.

The Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee was convened at the drugmaker's request to appeal the FDA's earlier decision to remove bevacizumab's indication to treat locally recurrent or metastatic HER2-negative breast cancer.

The committee endorsed that decision after voting unanimously that the drug does not work and is not safe.

FDA approved Avastin for treating breast cancer patients in 2008, based only on a single study carried out by the producing company, which suggested that the drug could improve lifespan of patients with metastatic breast cancer for 5.5 years in average.

However, further subsequent investigations failed to support those findings and showed that the drug may cause serious adverse effects such as high blood pressure, heart attacks and bleeding.
