There is not a word to describe their lemon sorbet.

Sorbet discussion makes me think of my grandmother (also thinking of her because it's the anniversary of her death). When she was diagnosed with heart disease, the doc told her to give up ice cream, and to replace it with sorbet. She'd never heard of sorbet, didn't know what it was. So, she refused to buy it. She was ADAMANT about this--wouldn't touch any food she'd never heard of before. But she complained bitterly about not getting ice cream, either.

So, I took her out for a picnic one day, as we would occasionally do. I took along a cooler with lemon sorbet. She loved lemon cream pie, so I was sure she'd like lemon sorbet--if I could get her to taste it. We got chicken from KFC (this was 20+ years ago, I was still an unenelightened, unrepentant carnivore.) with all the fixin's, a splurge from her heart healthy diet, and enjoyed a beautiful day along the Sangamon River on her farm. Then I broke out the desert. She was really enjoying what I called "lemon ice". On the way back to town, she asked where we could get more. So, we stopped at the IGA, and before we headed into the store, I took the carton out of the cooler, and said "Now, this is what we're looking for. It'll be with the ice cream." She looked for a minute and exclaimed, "God damn! Your grandmother is a stubborn ol' Scot!". I replied, "I know. It's what I love about her."

When she died in her sleep a few months later, I was given all four of the sorbet containers we found in her cooler. The taste of lemon sorbet still makes me think of her. And smile.

Thanks for reading! Have a good night!
