Wasn't there a scientist, who lost his reputation over it,
who posited that Atlantis had slipped like the skin of an onion down to the south pole from the middle of the Atlantic? I can't remember his name. Also, wasn't this the basis of the Stargate Atlantis series that Atlantis was once on Antartica and slipped through the Stargate to another star system because of a cataclysmic event?

What can I say. I love Sci-Fi and mythology especially when you can combine the two.
