joining the military!! I teach first grade dual language immersion class. This is a very hopeful method. Half the class is English speaking and half is home language Spanish. K and 1 are 90% Spanish and one teacher uses only one language. I only speak Spanish to my class. The minority language (less status) is the language of status in my classroom. The children are each other's teacher of their second language. The poor and the rich are peers. The poor migrant kids' culture is appreciated and they will have no reason to feel alienated by their education. They get a firm language base in their mother tongue, hence more literacy. Each year the English part of the day is increased by 10%. By the way, in fourth grade, the English language learners have mastered English better than their counterparts in the English only program. So I have digressed.
