Thoughts of my next-door Iranian neighbors come to mind -- the most gracious people I've ever encountered.

Thoughts come of my Iraqi Jewish friend, safely in the U.S., who pointed out that all people want the same thing: A home, a place to eat, sleep, and love their families.

Thoughts of my father arise, and his involvement in WWII -- the one that was going to put an end to this kind of inhumanity to man, and secure the general welfare so that democracy could thrive.

Thoughts of shame stir as I realize that the America I thought I knew through all these years has sullied its name in illegal tampering with the welfare of other countries for a long time, while I enjoyed the good life of an American citizen, safe from the terrors of war.

There will be a reckoning (I hear).
