19. I think the Iowa argument is a little naive
First, racism still exists. I see it and hear it all the time. People may not make the obviously racist comments as they once did (unless of course the comments are directed at illegal Mexicans where there seems to be no boundaries), but I still hear the indirect comments made and I see the eye rolling when certain subjects come up. Most of those comments are prefaced by people saying, "I'm not racist, but..."

I think you find more explicit racism where the population is more diverse. If the population in Iowa is actually 97% white, I would say most Iowans have never had the opportunity to be racists.

Let's not forget the campaign ran against Harold Ford jr in Tenn. I'm afraid that Obama will face a lot of that, but I think he can handle it. The question is will fringe voters be influenced by it.

As a country we've made some progress, but we still have a long way to go. I think an Obama candidacy will tell us a great deal about ourselves as a country.
