When and what polls are legitmate barometers of any election?

Pre- election opinion polling is always an inexact science driven by methodology and motive.

Exit polling is still considered to be the only legitmate method of verification - we need something better. Like a printed receipt of our vote like we can get at any ATM or gas station but that they insist we can't get in an election.

America, really, how stupid are we?
