30. yes, there is a fetish here about cheap real estate

nobody used that word but that's what it's coming down to.

it's like my friend said when told that houses were only 100k in Phoenix (back when they were).

he said in response, "So? I don't live in Phoenix. What does that have to do with me?" (we live in the Bay Area)

there is a huge amount of judgement coming down on people who had the temerity to simply live where they were born. I was born in working class in a then affordable area. I have chosen to stay here at great expense. I'm not complaining about it, but I am telling people who act as if those of us that live here are somehow greedy or irresponsible for spending what we need to in order to call our longtime hometowns our home.

there is an implication here that people in expensive areas are doing something wrong, that they should live elsewhere or that you can compare spending $1000/month in Iowa for a house with $2500-3500/month minimum here. well, if you live here and have to "modest" incomes of 50-60k each, you probably will spend $2500/month to live here because that's what it costs to live in an acceptable neighborhood and not share bedrooms with your kids.

that's my beef with this thread.
