Where have the Billions gone....

When we (the government, not us actually) give these banks and businesses all these billions....are we expecting them to pay it back? Can someone please explain how these banks and businesses get the money and how they plan on paying it back.

I know I will get some smart ass remarks to this, heck I would make a joke of it too. But, I really don't understand this. Is it a gift of free money or is there really a plan for us to get our money back?
