When I've had that conversation the past, the farthest I've ever gotten is an "everyone's entitled to their own opinion" sort of response. They might "shut up quickly," as you note, but in my experience it just means that they've stopped talking about it for the moment. I'm pretty sure that nothing has changed in their underlying mindset. At least, not as a result of anything I've said to them.

You note that you're of that generation: do you see people changing their views when approached by someone not of that generation? I hope that would be the case, but I have yet to see it, alas.
