The government has essentially become a front for the largest corporations and most of the economy has been structured for their short-term profits. We have an unsustainable food system within which food will become unaffordable for many (perhaps most) when the price of oil goes up. We are dependant on imported oil for fuel and (domestic) coal for electricity, which is contributing mightily to global warming and the attendant prblems. We have a bloated financial sector that is siphoning off profits from what few productive industries remain. Every attempt at addressing the national and global problems is subverted by special interests, so that the best we can hope for is some kind of toothless compromise.

At this point, I think the action is at the local and even personal level. We need to pull not just our checking accounts but whatever investments we have out of the Wall Street banks and invest in local sustainable busineses. We need to disengage,as much as possible, from the corrupted economic system: grow our food or buy it from local farmers. We need, in short, to create an alternative system to sustain ourseles when the corporate system collapses from its own shortsightedness.

In the current situation, gardening has become an act of resistance.
