The kid is brainwashed and the whole thing is a total set-up. A big clue: "...and told the story of a woman who disguised herself as a man to enter the army, emphasizing how courageous and important she was to the women of America even though no one had ever heard of her." He portrays himself as a critical thinker--one who apparently doesn't critically think to wonder WHY "no one had ever heard of her."

Unfortunately, this kid seems to be a misogynist-in-training.
