He did serve during World War (( although he ended up in Special Services which is where most show business types went. Wayne got out of serving because he had a family and that was considered an extenuating circumstance to not being drafted. And were they drafting men in their thirties back then?

You know, Jimmy Stewart's son was killed in Viet Nam. Did any of John Wayne's sons serve? His two oldest sons were probably too old - they'd have been draft age in the 1950's - and I'm guessing his younger sons might have been too young.

They showed one of my favorite John Wayne movies yesterday afternoon - "Big Jim McLain" which is about rooting out Commies in Hawaii. It's terrible propaganda but what a guilty pleasure! It makes "The Green Berets" look subtle by comparison.
