Rumsfeld hits back at Iraq critics (BBC)
<snip>

US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has delivered a defiantly upbeat message on Iraq, speaking of a "wonderful start" to reconstruction - despite attacks on the US-led forces.

And...

Mr Rumsfeld acknowledged that the security situation needed to be improved, but said "a wonderful start has been made".

The formation of the Iraq Governing Council and local councils indicated "progress on the political side" and the Iraqi people were "so much better off today than they were four or five months ago".

2. Rummy Avoided Speaking To The Troops In Iraq
Sorry no link but in tonights Khaleej Times there was an article about Rum Dumb cancelling his speech to the troops. They made these guys/gals (troops) sweep the streets in Iraq and set up a stage for yellow fangs and then Donny was a no show.

The troops were pissed off. They want to know when they are coming home but Donny just couldn't be bothered to show up.

Too busy, just like Arnhold Swagenhammer.

What a fucking fuckwittage.

COWARDS!!!! They have NO shame!!!

5. Think Rumball got a whiff of discontent among the troops?
I'll bet they heard a rumor of loud booing being planned, and they decided to not risk his failed appearance before the soldiers. After all, they might ask him the same question as they did before "shock and awe:" Sir, how long do you think we'll be here?"

RUMMY: Goodness, I can't imagine more than six months.

3. Disingenuous for sure, Insanity also comes to mind . . .
Even for someone known for lacking candor and often giving a false appearance of simple frankness (he has a disingenuous way of being supportive of the troops and people of Iraq when he really just wants to fulfill the PNAC mission), Rummy has been on a roll lately. I think he's moved well beyond the disingenuous level to words like:

irrational
unreasonable
&
bewildered

13. This is the same Rummy that berated a reporter two months ago
for using the words "guerrilla war" in referring to the situation in Iraq.

I agree with you, Rumsfeld shows clear symptoms of a personality disorder.

4. "wonderful start"......Rummy is the supreme bullshit artist
The reason we haven't had any soldiers killed in the last few days is because they've circled the wagons since the Shiite Mosque bombing in anticipation of all-out civil war. Iraq is as combustable as its ever been since "shock and awe." The "flowers, cotton candy and rainbows" Rummy is blowing up our asses is a cover for the failed policies that follow him and his ilk at every single turn.

8. Rumsfeld's fading glory
Judging by his defensive stand, I would say the sands of the hourglass are running out for him. I've read recently that the two people who are currently walking on thin ice are Cond. Rice and Rumsfeld. If Bush is really sincere (right, sure) about making a turnaround, he will have to get rid of some of the original planners of this mess.

Of course, firing them means admission of failure. So, Bush will have to decide the lesser of two evils: a) fire a few in the "cabal", promise to do the right thing, or b) let them stay. Assure people we're moving in the right direction, bla bla, and hope that viewers will fall for it one more time.

I would bet that the level of desperation he perceives himself to be in, will dictate what happens over next 2 or 3 weeks.

I'd say it's goodbye Rumsfeld.

9. Gosh, yes, a wonderful start has been made!

Not much water, little electricity, and not a helluva lot of food. Not to mention the popularity of our poor soldiers. Things are going just swimmingly! Does this guy's balloon EVER land?
