Germany Charges U.S. Woman with Attempted Treason

BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany has charged a U.S. translator with attempted treason for allegedly trying to sell military documents to a non-NATO country, the Federal Prosecutor's Office said on Friday.

The 43-year-old American woman, formerly a German citizen and now living in Canada, tried to sell secret German military documents she had been given to translate after payment problems with the company that had hired her, German prosecutors said.

Under German law, people can be charged with treason even if they are not German citizens, although their actions or intended actions must have risked damaging Germany.

German prosecutors did not name the non-NATO country.
