...damn. Given the extent of the damage to his brain, maybe this is the most merciful outcome.

Gov. Frank O'Bannon, a gentle but powerful leader in his beloved Indiana for more than 30 years, died today in a Chicago hospital where he was treated for a massive stroke.

O'Bannon, 73, a native of Corydon, died at Northwestern Memorial Hospital following his collapse Monday. The official cause of death was not immediately known.

O'Bannon, a Democrat in his second term, was found in his pajamas, unconscious and near death, on the floor of his Chicago hotel room Monday morning before a trade conference. He had suffered a type of stroke that involves bleeding in the brain.

We "Liberals Like Christ" offer our condolences to all who now suffer because they have had the good fortune to have been close enough to know and love a great man.

You gave a great number of years of service to this state. May your family find comfort through their grief in the knowledge of how many people, over the years, were touched through your work.

God Bless.

Edited on Sat Sep-13-03 04:57 PM by JasonBerry
I listened to his Labor Day radio address on his website. He was a good man. In the short talk, he reminded people of the sacrifices made so that we might even have a Labor Day.
The message is here:

26. Lt. Gov. Kearnan, yes, and yes.
He had previously said eh would not run in the next election despite O'Bannon's term limits coming up. I suspect that may change after this.

I won't say anymore because the tone of your message struck me as very cold and thoughtless. I tend to be a bit irritable over things like insensitivity of someones death.

Frank O'Bannon was a good man. He did what he could for people, with no thought for himself, and I'll miss him.

29. Kernan became acting gov on Thursday <?>
Edited on Sat Sep-13-03 06:06 PM by hippiechick
When it became apparent that any recovery would take months. Power was transferred by the Pres of the Senate and the State Supremo.

I wasn't particularly a fan of O'Bannon's, having worked for IN State Gov, I saw alot of 'head in the sand' attitude coming from the Statehouse, but I've come to see that alot of the problems and attitudes were inherited from Evan Bayh's tenure as Gov. Same with the budget issues.

May Frank rest in peace.

edit for typo

21. Does the Lt. Gov serve out? Is he a Dem also?
There's no way the repukes can still another election, right? I mean the state legislature doesn't pick a succesor at some point?
In some states the Gov. and Lt. Gov are separate elections so want to make sure he is a Dem. The only upside to this is that the Lt. Gov. will have the upperhand on an election next year, I guess.

The Lt. Gov., a Dem., serves out the term. He has already announced, though, that he won't run for the seat next year.

24. Kernon was already acting governor since Wednesday
Now there will be a special session of the legislature to choose a new Lt Gov until the election next year.

Kernon had already announced that he wasn't going to run for governor next year and repeated that earlier this week, but I've read stories that in light of the tragic events of the week that he's being asked to reconsider. Kernon is a war hero and someone cut very much from O'Bannon's cloth. He'd be a good governor but isn't really a very good politician and whoever runs against Mitch Daniels, who is Bush's hand-picked candidate for the Pubs, will have to really get out there...

22. Frank O'Bannon was a good man and a great Hoosier
You could search from Lake Michigan to the Ohio River and not find anyone who disliked him. It's a huge loss for all of us.

Prayers for his wife Judy and their kids and for all his friends and loved ones.

27. I didn't know him very well.
But even my Hoosier Repub friends had respect and liked Gov. O'Bannon even if they were in disagreement with his decisions.

Judy O'Bannon made a decision no wife should have to take him off life support. I have no doubt it was the correct one. It sounded like his quality of life was not going to be good from the articles I read.

Thoughts and prayers to his hamily.

34. I was at the Indianapolis Air Show today
When the Blue Angels were finished they brought the minster who'd done the blessing earlier to the mic and he announced the Gov. O'Bannon had passed away. He asked for a moment of silence and it was errie to see 100,000+ people stop and fall quiet...

God bless Governor O'Bannon, he was a great man, may he rest in peace.
