Iraq Costs Could Reach $100 billion

Big News Network.com Monday 14th July, 2003

With the U.S. federal deficit exploding comes a new concern over speculation the occupation of Iraq could cost over $100 billion through next year.

Administration officials concede spending levels in Iraq are considerably higher than anticipated, The Washington Post reported Sunday.

The cost so far, roughly $50 billion, is 14 percent over the military budget for this year, the Post said.

Officials are expected to confirm this week that the federal budget deficit will exceed $400 billion for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, the largest in U.S. history, the newspaper said.

1. Somebody double check my math. . .

but with 300 million citizens sharing the $100 billion cost for the occupation of Iraq, will each of us be at least $333,000 in debt this time next year? But what am I saying? This is all being put on a MasterCard, so it's our children's debt we're talking about, right? Which means, my two daughters will be almost $700,000 in debt -- each -- before they've had a chance to finish their next year in school (not counting, of course, whatever share of their grandparents' debt they'll be called to pay).

Gotta love that Republican budgetary brilliance, heh? No pay-as-you-go, tax-and-spend Democratic plan for them. No sirree. "Just put this war on my tab, Sam. . . let the next generation foot the bill!"

2. uh, my math says something quite different
maybe someone should check mine because it doesn't seem right, but when I divide 100 billion by 260 million (the approx population) I get 384.

Hell, for the price of one car payment I get to participate in the murder of thousands! What a deal!

3. i dont think the 100 billion is included
in the already 400 billion dollar deficit, also they arent counting the afghanistan operation. Remember we will supposedly be there 5 years......along with any more wars the neo-cons start in NK, Syria or Iran. Hey, whats a few trillion dollars right?
