Secret Service says Gannon approved appropriately...
Secret Service says Gannon approved appropriately

By John Byrne | RAW STORY Editor

The Secret Service has responded to a request from House Democrats to investigate the approval of discredited White House correspondent ‘Jeff Gannon’ and stated there was “no deviation” from “proper procedures,” RAW STORY can reveal.

The Service, which replied in a letter to Rep. John Conyers (D-MI)and Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY) on Monday, asserts that Gannon, whose real name was Jim Guckert, was approved appropriately.

“Please be advised that our Office of Protective Operations has looked into this matter and has determined that there was no deviation from Secret Service standards and procedures as your letter suggests,” Secret Service Deputy Assistant Director Conrad A. Everett wrote. “Mr. Guckert provided the Secret Service with his legal name, rather than his ‘pen name,’ and was assessed using the same criteria applied to all individuals seeking access to White House briefings.

<snip>

“While I appreciate the Secret Service’s response to some of our questions, the bigger picture remains,” Slaughter said in a statement to RAW STORY. “The relationship between this Administration and Jeff Gannon was anything but typical and the American people deserve the full, unvarnished truth.

14. If that is indeed the case, then "proper procedures"
leave a lot to be desired. The idea that the wh felt the need to place a shill at those conferences, particularly an unvetted one with an unsavory background, is totally unbecoming of the USA, but is to be expected as business as usual in the chimp administration.

16. However, the SS reports Clinton has had sex in the WH
what could the SS say about Gannon? He's a male prostitute who runs a gay porn web site and he has no journalistic background but for a RW internet web site? But what the hell. Give him a pass and clearance.

18. wasn't Gannon seen in the press room before Talon News was created?
A few weeks ago a screen capture of Gannon in the press room was found and it was dated atleast a month or so before Talon News even existed. Was that a fake?

19. Next question is...
...what exactly standards they use, if somebody like Gannon, who made a living from a criminal activity and wasn't a published journalist at all could pass through their "standard checks".

24. Secret Service has let several people past the "fences"
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_I...
of February 2003

an interesting read..

snip

And, as this reporter revealed last fall, the Secret Service's new computerized access-control system for the White House, built in the final months of the Clinton administration and put in place just after Bush arrived, apparently has left the White House complex even more vulnerable. Retired Secret Service officer Bill Castle and other sources familiar with the system told Insight that the system frequently crashes and gives inaccurate data about White House guests and employees. Insight also discovered that the chief executive officer and controlling shareholder of the company that was the lead contractor for the project was a mysterious Swiss resident named Niklaus Zenger, who had ties to the current Russian military and its Soviet predecessor and had been accused by former business associates of stealing proprietary technology.

All this going on despite *'s new 2003 appointee Basham who is ex- Secret Service...

Mr. Zenger's company, at the time, was removed from this security position but despite several interesting ventures (remember Red Cube?) his "new" company appears to be in charge of nuclear security at Scandia Labs and Los Alamos - WTF? He looks to be one heck of a slippery guy - no pictures or bios available. Supposedly Zenger wrote for Tass somewhere in his past.

Wondering if he is somehow tied into this?? Any thoughts?

28. So SS just checks for security risk, not reporter credentials?
If Guckert was CIA or other clandestine service, or if he was a certain rank in the military, wouldn't he have basic security clearance? Is that good enough to get in the press room? One would like to know what are the security levels one needs to get in.

I think they knew his real name and knew he was CIA or something like it. The SS probably aren't responsible for if he is a real reporter or if he owned a porn website.
