Drums pound to remind tax debtors

Tax defaulters in southern India are being confronted by drummers playing non-stop outside their homes.

The authorities in the city of Rajahmundry have sent 20 groups of drummers to play outside offenders' houses for the past week after waiving interest and penalties had failed to recover the back taxes.

The city, which is owed a total of 50 million rupees (£600,000), has reported 18 per cent of the debts have now been repaid.

An official spokesman said: "They put up a spectacle outside the houses of defaulters, draw them out and explain their dues to them and the need to clear it at the earliest
