Geldof blasts Bush and Mugabe (to Blair: "tell Bush 'it costs f*** all'")
and Blair has agreed! I'd love the see that conversation.

The rock star said Mr Blair should tell the American president that it would cost the United States "f*** all" to help relieve African poverty.

Speaking at the launch of the British-led Commission for Africa report, Geldof also attacked several African leaders, calling Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe an "ageing creep" and attacking Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni for trying to stay in office for life.

The Prime Minister then surprised his audience by backing Geldof. "Because I'm a politician in a suit I wince at the occasional word - but actually what he said is really what I think."

Unveiling the report, Mr Blair challenged the international community to free the African continent from the shackles of poverty, disease and war.

2. Bono has said this too. That it doesn't really cost that much.

I think he brought up how much the war was costing...or someone did, during that African summit thing he was a part of.

We spend obscene amounts in Iraq to blow it up and build it again, and it is a damn shame that no one wants to help Africa.

Maybe we can help them after they start bombing us, since that seems to be what we like to wait for. :scared:

4. Why can't these guys understand they don"t CARE about African
poverty. People like Bush could not possibly care less about deaths from poverty. This kind of mind-set thinks it is their fault.

5. well, I think it's a little more sinister than apathy.
they do what they HAVE to do from public sentiment and pressure. Left to their own devices they'd probably help with a firing squad.

7. I think I heard someone on the BBC say
(sorry, it was 4 in the morning and my radio was on so I don't remember exactly who) that it would cost about the price of a half a stick of gum per day per citizen to accomplish the task.

I can give up gum for six months.

9. F**k Bob Geldof
Edited on Fri Mar-11-05 03:31 PM by joefree1
A**hole should known this before he said the following:

Even liberals have credited Mr. Bush with doing more than his predecessor to help Africa. In May, Live Aid founder Bob Geldof said Mr. Bush is far more committed than Mr. Clinton to fighting AIDS and famine on the continent.
"Clinton talked the talk and did diddly squat, whereas Bush doesn't talk but does deliver," said Mr. Geldof, an Irish musician and activist who in 1985 staged the world's largest rock concert to combat starvation in Africa.
"You'll think I'm off my trolley when I say this, but the Bush administration is the most radical, in a positive sense, in the approach to Africa since Kennedy," he said.

edit ...
New Jersey Rep. Donald M. Payne, the ranking Democrat on the House International Relations Committee's Africa subcommittee, said Mr. Bush and Mr. Clinton have done more for Africa than any previous presidents. But he said the jury is still out on whether Mr. Bush's policy is better than his predecessor's.
"I don't think it's fair to evaluate Bush's record yet. He's only been in there for three years,"

11. Amazing, eh?
A lot of us liberals were shocked when Ol' Bob praised El Smirko. It would be a lot of fun watching this has-been Rock Star twist in the wind except for all the suffering in Africa.
