ignited legal controversy in Pakistan have been released from prison until they appear
before the country's Supreme Court, a prison official has said.
The gang rape of Mukhtaran Mai on the orders of a village council nearly three years
ago provoked an outcry in Pakistan and drew international attention to the plight of
women in the country after she went public about her ordeal.
Four men were sentenced to death for the rape along with two members of the council
for ordering it.
But a high court in the central city of Multan overturned that decision on March 3,
acquitting five of the six due to lack of evidence and commuting the death sentence of the
sixth to life imprisonment.
