Tyson Foods Will Cut Up To 600 Jobs In Arkansas (Layoff Update)
From News Services

"Tyson Foods Inc. of Springdale, Ark., the world's largest meat company, said Wednesday that it will cut up to 600 jobs, or about a third of the work force, at its chicken-processing plant in Hope, Ark.

Between 500 and 600 workers will lose their jobs starting Oct. 4, the company said.

EDIT

Sabre Holdinsg Corp. of Southlake, Texas, which owns Internet travel site Travelocity.com, will cut an undisclosed number of jobs in the fourth quarter because it expects lower earnings."

EDIT

2. What now? Tyson's not going after those low-cost...
Indian chickens, are they? :eyes:

More greeeeat news from the Dub Economy. And Travelocity.com; well, the more Dub's buddies in OPEC raise those oil prices, the more layoffs like Travelocity's we're likely to see. x(

Meanwhile, there are TWO layoffs in particular I want to see occur next year in Washington: Messrs. Bush and Cheney!

B-)

Our house and our campaign are both Tyson-free zones. I encourage you to do the same.

5. Hope, AR is where I live...
I saw this on yesterday's local news. They were saying that "only" 400 jobs were going to be cut, but who knows? Even 400 is quite a few for a town with a population of only about 10,000. They were saying that Tyson's will try to get most of them jobs in surrounding towns such as Texarkana, etc. :-(

This is not good news for this little town's economy. Maybe Bill Clinton will come back and visit his "boyhood home" (which is now a landmark) and can drum up some tourists for us. :-)

6. Just received local paper... The Hope Star
Edited on Thu Sep-25-03 04:57 PM by Flubadubya
Headline reads: Tyson to slice 100-200 more jobs.

So, that's where the extra numbers came from. They were underreporting the layoffs yesterday. Wonder why they felt it necessary to stretch the bad news out over two days?

Oh well, that's going to hit this town pretty hard. Tyson's is one of the "major" industries here.

8. Isn't Huckabee from Hope as well?
Is Reverend Governor Huckabee going to get off his butt and do anything, or is he just going to lead everyone in a prayer for jobs?

9. Gulp... that's one pol I hate to claim, but...
yes, old Lard Ass is from Hope too. This guy is such a joke. I don't know if you know about Hope's annual Watermelon Festival, but this guy has played with his band here every year he's been Governor except this one. Somehow he got his widdle feewin's hurt and made a big nasty scene about NOT coming to play this time.

He made a really stupid remark about how he wasn't going to be "used" for "entertainment value". Little does he know... that's all he's ever been worth around here.

10. Cuts like this at chicken processing plants here in Georgia would

mean laying off many Mexicans -- is that the case in Arkansas, too? If so, can they collect unemployment if they're here illegally? Or will they be forced to go back to Mexico?

11. I was headed to the Watermelon Festival one year
Edited on Thu Sep-25-03 08:37 PM by Art_from_Ark
I was dying to sample one of those 250-pound babies. Unfortunately, before we could make it to Hope, we stopped off at Murfreesboro, and after a day of fruitless searching for diamonds in that hot, (nearly) treeless field, my wife decided she'd had enough of discovering Natural Arkansas and insisted that we head back home-- no ifs, ands or buts about it.

As far as Huckabee goes, you think there's any chance that his boyhood home will ever become a tourist attraction? After all, he's the only governor to ever rate 10 Homer Simpson icons in the Top Ten Idiots list! That ought to count for something!

12. funny! and sad
Monday's Washington Journal on CSPAN reported that as many as 20 GM/Ford plants might close in the next couple of years. Headlines announcing massive layoffs are in the papers every day.
