SAN DIEGO -- San Diego city workers found out by e-mail on Tuesday that layoffs are included in the city manager's latest budget plan, according to a published report.

About 11,000 people who work for the city got the e-mail, reported the San Diego Union-Tribune, which also said that City Manager Lamont Ewell is expected to submit the proposal in May. The paper also reported that the e-mail told workers that the budget cuts "unfortunately will also affect employees through the elimination of positions."

<snip>

The paper reported the union leaders were not surprised by Tuesday's e-mail from Ewell, because he had been warning that the city was paying out more than it was bringing in. According to the Union-Tribune, the city is facing a $50 million budget gap.

1. Donna Frye, we need you!
What next for this bunch of numbskulls running the city? This Council has run the City nearly into bankruptcy, created a pension scandal and gotten itself investigated by the federal government.

You know it's bad when the FBI actually investigates a Republican-run administration!

3. I was fired from a job by e-mail
My client had communication problems. His solution was to fire me by e-mail rather than confronting the real problems I had been trying to present to him.

4. They did that where I work a couple of years ago
I work for a state agency and they had just hired a new HR chief who came from business. When the state budget had a shortfall, they decided to do a reduction in force (firings in other words- I don't know why they use code words like that). The HR chief notified everyone by email at 430 pm on a Friday that there would be RIFs. The people who were laid off got letters later on, not even a phone call to say they were being let go. So my name for the HR chief is now "Chainsaw Al" afte Chainsaw Al Dunlap who was famous for reorganizing companies priomarily by firing half the employees.
