Afghan bomb attack injures six
A roadside bomb has exploded in eastern Afghanistan, wounding six soldiers from the country's National Army, while a US army chief has warned of increased Taliban and al-Qaida activity.

According to Defence Ministry spokesman Muhammad Zahir Azimi on Tuesday, the device exploded as the soldiers were on their way from Asadabad to Nawabad in Kunar province.

The blast was caused by a remote-controlled bomb planted at the roadside and happened around 12:00am local time, Azimi added.

The attack comes as the commander of US forces in the country said both Taliban and Usama bin Ladin's al-Qaida network are renewing efforts to strengthen their positions.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Attackers using bombs and guns ambushed U.S. and Afghan government troops Tuesday in regions of the country rife with Taliban militants, wounding six Afghan and two American soldiers.

Insurgents detonated a bomb beside a vehicle carrying Afghan troops near Asadabad, 120 miles east of Kabul, in Kunar province, and then shot at them, the U.S. military said.

Four of the six wounded soldiers underwent surgery at U.S. military hospitals, a military statement said. The other two wounded soldiers were listed as stable.

Defense Ministry spokesman Mohammed Zahir Azimi said the six wounded Afghans were among 20 soldiers from the country's new U.S.-trained army. Several people detained nearby after the blast were being questioned, he said.
