Fresh from his victory in last year's Orange Revolution, Yushchenko and his Chicago-born wife - Kateryna Chumachenko Yushchenko - have come to the United States to cement ties with an ally and encourage investment in the former Soviet republic of 48 million people.
Yushchenko will meet Monday with President Bush in Washington and will speak on Wednesday to a joint session of Congress.

In Chicago, Yushchenko is scheduled to address the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations Monday - the 1,400 tickets were immediately sold out _and meet with Ukrainian community and business leaders. Yushchenko's wife plans to speak to a University of Chicago audience Tuesday morning, and the president will meet with the Tribune editorial board.
In Boston, Yushchenko is scheduled to receive a 2005 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award. The Yushchenkos also hope to visit a 5-year-old Ukrainian burn victim, Nastya Ovchar, who became a hero in Ukraine when she saved her 2-year-old sister from a fire March 15. The Yushchenkos recently helped bring Nastya to Boston Shriners Hospital, which specializes in the treatment of pediatric burn victims.
Yushchenko's schedule in Washington includes visits with Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Speaking in Kiev last week, he said he would try to convince Washington that, while Ukraine has decided to pull its troops from Iraq, it remains committed to maintaining a role in Iraq's economic and democratic development.
