Wounded in Florida Neighborhood; Victims Say Families Feuded Over Teen Dating

CRESCENT CITY, Fla. (AP) - Members of neighboring families shot at each other, wounding six people, as part of a long-running feud that victims said peaked when a girl from one family began dating a boy from the other one.
Six people ages 14 to 22 were taken to hospitals Sunday for treatment of gunshot wounds. Two remained hospitalized Monday, one in serious condition.

Baldemar Riojas, 46, was charged with six counts of aggravated battery with a firearm. He was freed on $15,000 bail.

Members of the Soliz and Ortiz families say their feud with the neighboring Riojas family has simmered for more than a year and became more heated when Riojas' teenage daughter started dating Miguel Soliz, 15, who was among the wounded.

Didn't Jeb Bush just sign a law that allows for people to begin shooting outside ones home if they feel the least bit threatened by someone? And why does AP report these people as being "wounded" when they get shot but they report our soldiers as getting "hurt" when they get shot in Iraq? Is AP trying to be funny.

It is near Avon Park, south of Orlando (but no where near Lake City which is quite a bit north).

15. It can be deadly
Edited on Mon Apr-11-05 12:45 PM by NNN0LHI
I had a couple of birds doing the wild thing while in flight crash right into my picture window the other day. Killed them both dead. I swear. Hauled their lascivious asses out to the garbage this morning.

9. If I was him I'd claim I felt threatened
because of the long standing feud .....besides, isn't that how Florida lawmakers want it to work?

if you feel threatened, you're justified in shooting...isn't that how the thinking goes?

Golly, they are going to apply this equally and fairly to everyone aren't they?...or just apply it to those "special" cases...

23. I think you have to prove that you were threatened with deadly force
That's how most common law works.

The new FL law is mainly about retreat, as I understand it.

Most states have laws that say that you cannot act in self-defense if you have some sort of option of retreat. I believe the new FL law says that you do not have to retreat; if threatened with deadly force, you may respond with deadly force. If threatened with non-lethal force, you may respond with non-lethal force.

Florida here.

Not ALL of us are "crazy ass human waste'.

Now the governor, OK. Please put the blame where it belongs; on Jeb Bush and the right wing legislature he has ensconced in Tallahassee.

Your apology is accepted.

34. Actually our Civil Law system...
Edited on Mon Apr-11-05 04:05 PM by NNN0LHI
...was designed to prevent people from resorting to violence to settle disputes. At one time disputes were settled by two people stepping off 20 paces and then they began shooting at one another.
