Breaking: 7 Students Arrested In School Fight - School Placed on Lockdown
http://www.click2houston.com/news/4372351/detail.html

HOUSTON -- Seven students were arrested Tuesday afternoon after a fistfight at a southeast Houston high school, police told Local 2.

Officials said the altercation broke out at about 12:30 p.m. at Worthing High School, located at 9215 Scott, in the Houston Independent School District.

A security guard was hit in the face during the fight.

Several students were treated for minor injuries.

The school was placed on lockdown during the disturbance.

_________

Am I assuming lockdown is locked the school completely and let no one out until everything is clear?

2. Lockdown?????????
When I was in school (back during the stone age) boys got in fights, they either fought it out on the mats or got sent home. Sounds like testosterone running amok.

10. I'm Going To Get Hammered For This.
But bullshit like this probably has a lot to do with why kids shoot other kids. Without any sort of outlet, short of going to an administrator, what's a kid to do? When I was in school we fought it out. It didn't solve much but kids weren't getting shot either.

Let the flames begin.

12. I think you make a good point
Letting kids beat each other up is not really a good solution, but teenage boys need an outlet for pent up frustrations. At that age, tempers are short. An old broken down Chevy, a couple of sledge hammers and someone to supervise maybe?

29. not the same thing....
bullying and harassment is what makes kids pick up guns. these are young men set upon by two, three or more bullies who humiliate the victim in frontof other kids....can be verbal putdowns, wedgies, physical violence or taunting.

we're not talking about two guys who are able to defend themselves going to the school parking lot to duke it out a bit. usually the worst that happens is one or both go home with a fat lip or bloody nose and they're ok the next day.

victims of bullying are not able to defend themselves from these groups of predatory kids who set upon them. the go home feeling rage and humiliation and plot revenge. for some the fantasies of revenge are enough. for a few who can't process those feelings, they're liable to pick up a gun.

I know. I was bullied; I bullied others. there are kids who to this day owe me an apology; there are kids i owe an apology. for years i thought of looking up the motherfuckers and dismembering them.

32. These things always intensify in the spring semester...
I admit that I don't know anything about the situation in Houston right now, but after almost 20 years as a high school teacher, I (and many others) have observed that these 'fights' occur most often when the weather begins to warm.

24. I tend to agree with you,
when I was in school, the worst anyone got for a fistfight was perhaps a 3-day suspension, the worst I ever received was a set of broken glasses and a bloody nose, followed by a lecture in the principal's office.

15. Maybe because they are being more widely broadcast.
Hell, this sounds like right out of my jr. high, thirty years ago. High school was also a fairly violent place.

Kids fight, they always have, over the stupidest of reasons. I don't think that these incidences are any more prevalent, just spread more widely in this day of the internet and instant news.

19. Exactly
Even 20 years ago it was like that. Two groups of chuckleheads would start talking smack with each other, and for a day or two, rumors would swirl around the hallways that so and so was going to kick so and so's ass....Most of the time, if anything happened (and it usually didn't), it took place outside of school, off-grounds. But every year or two something would erupt during lunch, or in the gym locker room, and mass chaos would ensue, followed by the school's predictable over-reaction.

This gave the rest of us less-violent types the perfect means to get away much more creative shit....and usually meant that some over-testosteroned idiot would be out of circulation for a week or so....so no big deal.

13. we were really lucky...
Right now my son attends a small Montessori where most of the teachers are liberal democrats. Unfortunately, they only go through the 8th grade. I don't like any of the high-school choices around here. :(

I don't understand why more people don't find that "lockdown" idea *creepy*

11. lockdown
for 2 or 3 years, my high school was plagued by several incidents in which a student would write some sort of stupid bomb threat on the bathroom wall, somebody would report it, and the whole school was placed under lockdown. all classroom doors locked, windows shut, shades down, no use of computers or telephones. guidelines also said to keep away from walls. during all of this, school staff and local police would usually search lockers for bombs (yeah right). sometimes classes would be escorted one at a time to the auditorium or gymnasium and we would be held there for who knows how long. one time they even bused us up to the 3-6 building. thankfully whoever was doing it either got kicked out, moved, or graduated, and it stopped a number of years ago.

funny thing is, most of these "bomb threats" were found in one of the girl's bathrooms. so they installed a camera on the wall opposite the door, and started requiring all students to sign in and out of class whenever they went to the bathroom, locker, what have you.

next year (luckily after i graduate), the school will be installing a new security system and many cameras. these were part of a voter referendum to decide whether or not to install lights for the football field and get new computers.

18. Hi Cat! Yes. Lockdown is when everyone stays where they are and no
movement until the all clear signal. Not even a potty break! We had a lockdown at the high school last year. Had my class in the library for research and we had to stay in there for over 2.5 hours! That was fun! LOL!

23. Acclimating kids to a prison mentality - the police state.
Lockdown is indeed what schools do nowadays, on the slightest provocation, too. I am horrified by the concept and the effect it has.

My daughters high school issued a bulletin that stated that in the event the US were placed on red terror alert, the school would go on lockdown and parents would not be allowed to get their kids.

Like hell.

28. I'll check my sources tomorrow
and get the inside skinny if anything. I have been a school nurse for 10 yrs. First, a lock down is as was described by the earlier poster. It is a means of crowd control and way to keep violence from escalating (gangs and gang revenge). It is also used for drug sweeps. Now I am here to tell you, I have been a school nurse in Mayberry AND in the evil big city. Fights ALWAYS break out esp after Spring Break....something about the hormones, limited impulse control, and senioritis. That guy in your English class has been stepping on your last nerve all year and you have had it up to your eyeballs. You get the picture. My daughter is a product of public schools and so was I. I recieved as is she, a fine public education. I work very hard both in and out of the public school for our kids so I am a well informed insider. The day we give up on public schools is the day we give up on Democracy in this country and go to plutocracy, aristocracy, or theocracy.

From one product of public school education to another, I want to thank you for your post. My parents went to public schools in Alabama, I went to public school in Alabama, and now my daughter is starting out, heading for first grade next year!

34. Regarding Lockdown
We don't know the details of this story. Was this gang related? Could any of the students involved have had weapons in their cars? Perhaps a lockdown was just the right thing to do. I would like to give the school administration the benefit of the doubt here. They know the kids involved in this fight. Maybe they did just the right thing to prevent more violence.
