Thailand Prepares For World Toilet Summit
April 14, 2005

Thailand is watching its bottom line. The World Toilet Summit will be there next year and the Thais want to be good hosts.

So, Thailand is upgrading its public restrooms in advance of the meeting. One health ministry official says clean toilets are very important for a country's image.

The summit will tackle such toilet topics as the latest developments in technology and hygiene.

4. When visiting Massachusetts, be sure to include the

American Sanitary Plumbing Museum

39 Piedmont Street
Worcester, MA 01610

If you're reading this in the "john" on your laptop, you should be very very thankful. Yes, it's nice to have a portable Internet, but it's much nicer to have a toilet. It's easy to take such things for granted, and the American Sanitary Plumbing Museum helps us remember what pampered lives we all lead. Consider that George Washington never knew the simple convenience of toilet paper. (Two words: reusable sponge.) Yes, there's an exhibit on that. There are also early toilets that used lime instead of water, toilets that did nothing more but dump the effluent into the "basement," and toilets with holes large enough to dispose of household pets...not fish, but cats and dogs. It's easy to make fun of such a place, but the topic is treated seriously as it should be. Who can blame the Victorians for being cranky after seeing what their bathrooms were like? They also have one of the first dishwashers; the Kohler "Electric Sink." It looks just as dangerous as it sounds. It's in a rather unsavory section of town which somehow seems fitting for a topic that many in "polite" society won't broach. I guess that means we're not polite.

Now why didn't Worcester get to host this conference? Crap!

For the Olympics. NPR did a bit on the subject a few weeks ago.

You haven't lived until you've experienced Asian toilets.
