Evacuation of Newfoundland oil rigs called off (Missile test OK)
14 Apr 2005

ST. JOHN'S, NFLD. - Plans to evacuate crews from the Hibernia and Terra Nova oil platforms off Newfoundland on Thursday because of an impending American missile test have been cancelled.

The evacuation would have cost an estimated $100 million, including lost production revenue.

Premier Danny Williams said late Wednesday that he was satisfied a 10-tonne booster from a Titan IVB rocket will not pose a risk to oil crews working on the Grand Banks.

Williams spoke with both Prime Minister Paul Martin and Deputy Prime Minister Anne McLellan about the matter.
