Edited on Tue Apr-19-05 11:05 AM by leftchick
Since there has been confusion as to smoke color in the past they now ring the Sistine Chapel's bells along with the smoke to verify. Has anyone heard the bells?

I am watching ABC right now and they mentioned the bells, but apparently Italian Radio is proclaiming that the smoke is white. It sure looks white to me.

If he chooses Leo for example, more social justice, etc. JP111, a continuation of the same old.

A sense of the Church continuing on the same path as JP II. A new pope, John Paul III, will embody that sense.

72. You might be right.
I am hoping against hope that it is someone who will be more progressive and more dedicated to unity rather than divisiveness. JP11 was wonderful about social justice, but his record on women and gays was atrocious.

I am pretty sure he is getting an earful right about now from my mom the uber-liberal who was progressive way back in the day.

White Smoke, Bells Signal Election of Pope

VATICAN CITY - White smoke poured from a chimney at the Vatican and bells tolled on Tuesday evening, announcing to the world that a new pope was elected in the first papal conclave of the new millennium. Crowds in the square chanted: "Viva il Papa!" or "Long live the pope!"

71. At least he won't be simplistic.
The vatican doesn't run on the same liberal/conservative track youj are trying to force it into.

John Paul II, for example, when it came to social justice, war, and poverty, was as progressive as you can be.

When it came to sex, he was reactionary.

But its not so simple, and its not the same, as the black and white we use in american politics.

74. Washington Post Foreign Service: New Pope Has Been Chosen
New Pope Has Been Chosen

By Daniel Williams and Alan Cooperman
Washington Post Foreign Service
Tuesday, April 19, 2005; 12:11 PM

VATICAN CITY, April 19 -- White smoke from the Sistine Chapel's chimney and the pealing of bells Tuesday signaled that the cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church have elected a new pope to succeed Pope John Paul II.

Thousands watched in St. Peter's Square and millions more waited around the world to hear the announcement of the new pontiff's identity.

The election of the new pope came on only the second day of voting by cardinals in a secret conclave.

Under the rules, the 115 voting cardinals chose the 265th pope with a two-thirds majority, or at least 77 voting in favor.

87. Vatican at a loss to explain why exit poll (white) disagrees with...
... official tally (black).

A spokesman for the Bush administration who is in the Vatican observing the proceedings noted that what is seen as "white" can often actually be "black". He went on to say that what is seen as "war" can often actually be "freedom on the march" and what is seen as "a Kerry victory" is actually "a Bush mandate".

The Vatican's Enforcer of the Faith
As a seminarian, he was briefly enrolled in the Hitler Youth in the early 1940s, though he was never a member of the Nazi party. In 1943 he was conscripted into an antiaircraft unit guarding a BMW plant outside Munich. Later Ratzinger was sent to Austria's border with Hungary to erect tank traps. After being shipped back to Bavaria, he deserted. When the war ended, he was an American prisoner of war.

Under Hitler, Ratzinger says he watched the Nazis twist and distort the truth. Their lies about Jews, about genetics, were more than academic exercises. People died by the millions because of them. The church's service to society, Ratzinger concluded, is to stand for absolute truths that function as boundary markers: Move about within these limits, but outside them lies disaster.

Later reflection on the Nazi experience also left Ratzinger with a conviction that theology must either bind itself to the church, with its creed and teaching authority, or it becomes the plaything of outside forces -- the state in a totalitarian system or secular culture in Western liberal democracies. In a widely noted 1986 lecture in Toronto, Ratzinger put it this way: "A church without theology impoverishes and blinds, while a churchless theology melts away into caprice." *

135. That's bad news for the church, imo
It will continue to lose priests and the church will continue to lose congregants due to Ratzinger's extreme views.

164. Taking the name of Benedict implies extreme conservatism-
The original Benedict authored 'the Rule' which included the Opus Dei.

152. This is the problem with the new voting rules
I heard that the conservatives were behind Ratzinger and that he had just over 50%. They knew that if they just held steady for 2 weeks it'd go to straight majority and they'd win.

After a few votes they probably just let it be known "Hey, look we're not changing. Ratzinger is going to be the new pope, you might as well vote for him now so we don't make people wait forever."

Why put up with this B.S. that will trickle down from the top? There are better churches out there, anyway.

176. The predictions of St. Malachy O'Morgair, Archbishop of Armagh, Ireland
c. 1139

"The next Pope after John Paul II will take the name Pope Benedict XVI, in imitation of Saint Benedict and also of Pope Benedict XV. Just as Pope Benedict XV was an emissary of peace, so will Pope Benedict XVI be an emissary of peace. Just as Pope Benedict XV sought peace and spoke of peace and wrote papal documents seeking peace, so will Pope Benedict XVI do also. Just as Pope Benedict XV failed to achieve peace in the world, so will Pope Benedict XVI fail to achieve peace in the world. Just as the Pontificate of Benedict XV began prior to World War I, so will the Pontificate of Benedict XVI occur prior to World War III. After the Pontificate of Benedict XVI, World War III will begin. The Arab nations will threaten and attack the United States; they will threaten, attack, invade and conquer Europe; they will threaten, attack, invade and conquer the northern part of Africa. It is God's will."
