Bush visiting national park for Earth Day

Trip highlights private initiative, activists want protectionsThe Associated Press

Updated: 7:26 a.m. ET April 22, 2005WASHINGTON -

President Bush is celebrating Earth Day with one of his favorite past-times — working the land.

The president, who often is at odds with environmentalists, was scheduled to celebrate their holiday on Friday in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. He was to speak at the Cades Cove area near Townsend, Tenn., after some quick restoration work on one of more than a dozen trails that originates there.

“I’m looking forward to getting my hands dirty,” Bush, who spends hours during his down time clearing brush on his Texas ranch, told young people awarded for their environmental work at the White House on Thursday. “Looking forward to getting outside of Washington.”

Bush is the first sitting president to visit the park since Franklin Roosevelt dedicated it in 1940, White House press secretary Scott McClellan said. McClellan said the trip marks the 22nd national park that Bush has visited since taking office, a record for sitting presidents.

"McClellan said the trip marks the 22nd national park that Bush has visited since taking office, a record for sitting presidents." Oh, I see, that's a demonstration of his committment?

Yeah, he really is a folksy, charming environmental president, ain't he? :puke:

30. What Scotty didn't say was that after visiting those parks
Bush proceeded to cut the budgets for National Parks and open them up to logging, mining, oil exploration, etc. "Healthy Forests" indeed.

You never know when that racoon might be a terrorist from the Earth Liberation Front.

Shoot first and ask questions later. It works in Iraq.

24. LOL-- you beat me to it.
Wonder what the cost will be to replant all the trees removed in Springfield last week...seems ironic to remove scores of trees for one shrub.

14. They're clearcutting my view today. Thanks Bush.
It's nonstop stripping of our forests. Where is the leader who talks about limits? I had a beautiful forest next to my house. It's gone.

Trees are part of the atmosphere. But we are indiscriminately bombarding it with heat and co2, all while removing the part that converts.

If instead of preaching about a tiger in every tank, we should have been thinking about a better world. Now as I listen to the republicans with their chainsaws nextdoor, I can see that it's coming to an end.

This year I celebrate earth day by saying goodbye to it. Nice knowing you, earth.

15. Hope a tree falls on him
in retaliation. What's the name of those walking/talking trees in Lord of the Rings?
This is the ultimate in hypocrisy. Bush has the worst environmental record of any president in history, and is in fact, actively working to destroy every single protection.

It makes as much sense, considering the source, doesn't it?

As usual, bush is making himself ridiculous. I hope he hugs a tree and gets a splinter in his _______.

26. Bush Cancels Great Smoky Mountains Visit
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=544&ncid=703&e=1&u=/ap/20050422/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush

<snip>

"President Bush canceled an Earth Day visit to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on Friday because of bad weather.

White House press secretary Scott McClellan said the threat of hail and thunder storms was keeping the president from visiting the park, but Air Force One still was making a brief stop at an airport outside Knoxville, Tenn., so Bush could make remarks near the park on Earth Day.

Bush then planned to fly on to Texas, where he was spending the weekend at his ranch and then hosting Crown Prince Abdullah of Saudi Arabia on Monday.

The president, who often is at odds with environmentalists, was scheduled to celebrate their holiday with a speech at the park's Cades Cove area, after some quick restoration work on one of more than a dozen trails that originates there."

getting these trees out of the way for the logging operation which is necessary to get the mining equipment in here and maybe get some poor corporate ranchers access to grazing for pennies an acre.

stupid enviroment slowing down the work of 'Murica.

it's hard work.

takes resolve.

gotta be resolute and work hard.
