Bush to Host News Conference on Thursday (ending SocSec "tour")
Edited on Wed Apr-27-05 08:48 PM by Rose Siding
WASHINGTON - President Bush on Thursday night will address motorists' concerns about high gas prices and push for Social Security reform during the sixth news conference since his November re-election.

The news conference is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. EDT Thursday in the East Room. The White House has asked television networks to broadcast the prime-time session.

White House press secretary Scott McClellan said the president's news conference was timed to coincide with the end of administration officials' nationwide tour to convince Americans that the nation's retirement system needs to be revamped. In a 10- to 12-minute opening statement, McClellan said Bush would "talk in more specific ways" about his ideas for achieving a bipartisan solution to Social Security's future solvency problems.

"This is an important period in the national debate over strengthening Social Security," McClellan said. "We're in a new phase of stepped-up legislative activity. The 60 cities in 60 days tour ends this Sunday. We've been out across the country educating the American people about the problems facing Social Security."

16. Remember his "specifics" for Iraq - the 5-step plan?
Except the day after he annouced it, they figured out that they'd already tried every one of them, and had FAILED in all of them?

84. It was in that one speech:
http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/wariniraq/gwbushiraq52404.htm

There are five steps in our plan to help Iraq achieve democracy and freedom. We will hand over authority to a sovereign Iraqi government, help establish security, continue rebuilding Iraq's infrastructure, encourage more international support, and move toward a national election that will bring forward new leaders empowered by the Iraqi people.

Sheesh. What a joke, huh?

2. What television is he going to be pre-empting?
Thursday's not too big of a night, TV-wise, and I'm planning on going to bed early, but he always finds some way to screw things up with these press conferences.

If nothing else, we'll get a few more ridiculous Bushisms to toss around the next couple of days.

8. Are real reporters going to be allowed in to ask real questions?
Or will it be another scripted dog-and-pony show featuring the likes Guckert/Gannon/Goodbar and Elisabeth "I'm too scared to ask the big, important president a question" Bumiller?

From The Daily Howler:

Now, the Spotless Mind takes us behind the scenes at that famous pre-Iraq White House press conference. The conference was held on March 6, 2003; assembled reporters lobbed softballs at Bush, bringing themselves widespread ridicule (see THE DAILY HOWLER, 3/11/03). Finally, Bumiller explains the corps’ behavior. Kafka couldn’t have dreamed up a White House correspondent who was willing to say this in public:

BUMILLER: I think we were very deferential because…it’s live, it’s very intense, it’s frightening to stand up there. Think about it, you’re standing up on prime-time live TV asking the president of the United States a question when the country’s about to go to war. There was a very serious, somber tone that evening, and no one wanted to get into an argument with the president at this very serious time.

It’s frightening to stand up there, Bumiller says. It’s frightening to ask the president a question! At the time, Bush hadn’t met with the press in four months; dozens of questions were begging for answers. But according to Bumiller, it was too scary. Why did the “press” lob softballs that day? No one wanted to get in an argument, the spotless Times journalist says.

It’s amazing that Bumiller felt this way. It’s much more amazing that she’d say this in public.

73. So true about the whining...
After all, Junior is doing this speech because his ratings are plummeting, his SocSec plan is dying, his Bolton nomination is tanking and he's being blamed for high gas prices.

This is crisis PR--and Bush always looks like a nimrod when he's in crisis mode.

Like you said, he whines. His insecurity shines like a burning beacon. He gets that useless look about him, as if he's saying inside, "Hi! I'm a total idiot!"

Ohhhhhh, I can't wait! I'm popping some corn too!

This is going to be GREAT! It will be an abomination that is oh-so fun to watch----kinda like watching Chris Farley do ballet!

that this douchebag would have NEVER gotten re-elected if he hadn't been a "wartime president," during a war, of course, that he started. This is the only reason for the entire Iraq invasion, to help his popularity since he had no intention of finding OBL (who is comfortably living under the auspices of Prince Bandar (Bush). He made Saddam the enemy instead of OBL and stupid people bought it. These stupid right-wing nut jobs don't even remember OBL-they all think of Iraq and think of 9/11 as interrelated.

37. Bush to host news conference on Thursday night
http://www.wavy.com/Global/story.asp?S=3270930

WHITE HOUSE High gasoline prices and changes to the Social Security system are expected to come up during a Thursday evening presidential news conference.

It will be President Bush's sixth news conference since his re-election.It's scheduled for 8:30 Eastern Daylight Time in the East Room. The White House has asked T-V networks to broadcast the prime-time event.White House press secretary Scott McClellan says Bush will open the session with a statement of about ten minutes dealing with Social Security. The media event ties in with the administration's 60-day promotional campaign to push changes in the retirement system.Bush held his last news conference on March 16th.

...a bit more...

I found it very interesting that this newsblurb was listed with this one:

Confidence in Bush's plans for 2nd term fades

http://www.freep.com/news/politics/bush25e_20050425.htm

Skepticism, political dissention help to hinder his bold agenda

April 25, 2005

WASHINGTON -- President George W. Bush painted his second-term vision in bold, aggressive strokes: He would reform Social Security, continue to reshape the nation's education system and remodel the nation's judiciary by appointing more conservative judges to the federal bench.

"I've earned capital in this election, and I'm going to spend it for what I told the people I'd spend it on: Social Security, tax reform, moving the economy forward, education and winning the war on terrorism," Bush said two days after he won re-election.

But three months into his second term, Bush's bold agenda is bogged down by public skepticism about some of his proposals, growing resistance from Democrats, dissension within his party's ranks and what some analysts consider second-term overconfidence.

Is that the smell of desperation?

Edited on Wed Apr-27-05 11:43 PM by EricWhitaker
What I see them doing on this one is putting Bush out there. The minute he finishes, the networks, Faux first, then probably ABC reporting on a quick push poll, supplied of course by C.Rove inc. The poll will suggest that a good majority of Americans were swayed by the speech. Then NBC and CBS have a group of "ordinary" Americans and Senior citizens on the round table. Each goes around and says how impressed they were, and now that they've heard the details they're all for the changes.

This will be the story for the remainder of the week. How public opinion has CHANGED on SS. The script for the networks is already written regardless of what * says and how stupid he looks to the rest of us. Seems like those in the Red states don't trust their own eyes and ears. They need Faux and Rush to interpret for them what they've just observed, otherwise they're helpless.

Hopefully I'm wrong

Time to spin up the great Wurlitzer and let the American people know that, despite their own opinions and misgivings, and the abject failure of his foreign and domestic policies, Bush* is doing a great job, and the majority of American support him. :eyes:

2003 = 22 terrorist incidents in Iraq.

2004 = 168 terrorist incidents in Iraq.

As with education, environment, social security, rightwingnut judges, and Schiavo, bush is a total failure at his "war on terra", too.

59. Blowing smoke and speaking directly to poll results - from Business Week
http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily/dnflash/apr2005/nf20050428_9012_db045.htm

snip>

Yet, Kerry failed to turn energy into a significant policy issue in the race. And the White House learned a lesson: You can score political points by talking about energy policy -- without ever needing to follow through. It has been widely reported that Vice-President Dick Cheney privately told top Washington energy-policy wonks after the 2004 election that the Administration would put the issue low on its priority list for 2005.

"RETAKE THIS ISSUE." That was before oil prices soared, however, and the Republicans started taking a beating, as higher gasoline and home-heating costs made Americans angry and anxious. President Bush's approval ratings dropped, and GOP strategists cited rising fuel costs as the primary rub.

In a strongly worded report to his party in late winter, Republican pollster Frank Luntz warned: "Right now, the Democrats are exhibiting perfect pitch when it come to their energy message.... You need to retake this issue now before the next spike at the pump and before the next surge in our home-heating bills."

Luntz recommended that Republicans hammer hard on four themes: energy independence, national security, the power of innovation and new technology, and the importance of balancing new supplies with conservation. "The energy debate is ripe for partisan picking," he wrote. "Americans loathe the idea of being reliant on the Middle East for our energy needs -- and they were waiting for someone to tell them so."

snip>

The President's failure to propose any meaningful solutions, while claiming to "do the right thing for America" makes it hard not to conclude that the Administration's main goal is not energy independence, but rather improving its standing the polls. Indeed, what's most striking about Bush's Apr. 27 speech is how closely it follows the script written by Luntz earlier this year. A few examples:

72. News conference. Hmmm. --A speech without a Dem followup.--
Even a hard question or two is better for Pugs than having SS noted as an insurance program that helps protect America from recession/depression and that Bush's plan is a risky program that will go bad just when it would be needed most.

He'll have pat answers for kicking people out. Overzelous persons. The fundies will laugh.

He'll throw numbers, percent numbers, date numbers, he may even number the numbers until numbers become numb-ers. And, it won't be comfortably numb.

No hard followup questions.

No, they just needed to keep Dems from framing the issue.

90. Bush plans prime time news conference (will they give up already?)
Will offer 'more specifics' about Social Security plan Thursday

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush will hold a prime time news conference Thursday to discuss two "important priorities" for the White House -- Social Security and energy -- a spokesman said.

"This is an important period in the national debate over strengthening Social Security," White House press secretary Scott McClellan said.

On Sunday, Bush is slated to complete a 60-day, 60-city tour during which he has called for change in the nation's retirement program for the elderly.

The tour was billed as an opportunity to educate the American people about the president's ideas to overhaul the Social Security system, which was established in the 1930s as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal during the Great Depression.
