Iraqi Parliament OKs Elected Government (US Soldier Killed - #1576)

One American soldier was killed and four wounded when an improvised explosive device detonated Thursday near Hawija, about 150 miles north of Baghdad, the military said. As of Thursday, at least 1,572 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

Also in northern Iraq, near Tikrit, a suicide car bomb exploded near an Iraqi army checkpoint, wounding four Iraqi soldiers, three U.S. soldiers and seven Iraqi civilians, the U.S. military said.

In the capital, Lt. Col. Alaa Khalil Ibrahim, who worked in the visa section of the Interior Ministry, was shot and killed on the way to work by gunmen in eastern Baghdad, police said. Later, a roadside bomb exploded, wounding two policemen on patrol in a different part of eastern Baghdad, police said.
