Washington vetoes UN resolution condemning controversial Israeli security wall

NEW YORK : The United States on Tuesday vetoed a UN Security Council resolution condemning the controversial security barrier Israel is building across part of Palestinian territory in the West Bank.

Using its veto power on the UN Security Council for the second time in two months to block a measure criticising Israel, US ambassador John Negroponte spiked the resolution, which had been proposed by Syria.

"This resolution failed to address both sides of the larger security context of the Middle East, including the devastating suicide attacks that Israelis have had to endure for the past three years," he said.

"The resolution put forward today was unbalanced and did not condemn terrorism in explicit terms," added Mr Negroponte

1. oh, lovely

"part of Palestinian territory"?? that wording makes it sound like the wall is shaving few centimeters off the border. when in reality, this frigging wall would enclose what looks like about half of Palestine.

2. This is tragic, but to be expected.
You could go around in endless circles arguing which side started
terra tactics first, but it is undeniable that this monstrous wall
not only encroaches on to Palestinian land, it effectively cuts
various Palestinian settlements off from each other, thereby creating
a series of ghettoes throughout the territories. The result will
be to cut off Palestinians not only from each other, but from work,
schools, hospitals and even food and water. No matter what the
rights and wrongs of the entire Palestinian question, this is an
action of gross inhumanity, and no civilized country should support
it. I really don't see why condemning the wall could be interpreted
in any way as giving support to the Palestinian cause - the only
certain result of allowing it to continue will be an escalation of
anger amongst Arab communities, and a coninuation of the endless
cycle of revenge and retaliation.

Surely it's not asking too much of a responsible U.S. President
to support what is in fact a very mild resolution in the name of
humanity - oh, I forgot ....

3. this disgusts me...
how on earth can we ever be considered "partners for peace" when we do this shit?

The wall is an abomination, and if it were ANY other nation, we'd condemn it strongly.

4. Once again, the U.S. comes down on the side of fascism and
apartheid. How many resolutions has Israel ignored anyway, 65 or so? Point being, that even if this passed, they would just ignore it.

PNAC, Bush, and Sharon/Likud, the New Reich!
