Snakes, cholera add to Asia toll

Poisonous snakes, cholera and landslides have contributed to south Asia's flood-season death toll of 297 after six weeks of monsoon rain, said relief and government officials on Wednesday.

Bangladesh, where 2.5 million people are marooned by overflowing rivers, has suffered the worst, with 154 dead, said the officials.

Snakes, flushed out of their holes by the floods, killed four people on Tuesday in Sirajganj district, about 100km northwest of the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka.

Also on Tuesday, five children drowned in flood waters in Sirajganj and northern Gaibandha district.

India has 76 confirmed deaths, mostly in northeastern Assam state, where more than three million people are cut off by raging waters.

In the eastern Indian state of Bihar, state officials said on Wednesday that more than a million people had been affected by floods, which had destroyed crops, and almost 1 000 houses.
