NEW YORK -- A Texas oilman and two Swiss business executives were charged Friday with directing the payment of millions of dollars in illegal kickbacks to Saddam Hussein's Iraqi regime to benefit from the United Nations oil-for-food program.

Oscar S. Wyatt Jr., former chairman of Coastal Corp., was arrested Friday morning at his home in Houston while the U.S. government was seeking the extradition of Catalina del Socorro Miguel Fuentes and Mohammed Saidji from Switzerland.

The men were named in a superseding indictment unsealed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. An earlier version of the indictment in April had charged two Houston oilmen and a British citizen with participating in the corruption of the oil-for-food program.

The program broke down after the United Nations let Hussein choose who could purchase Iraqi oil. By 2000, authorities said, Hussein had begun insisting that those he dealt with be willing to pay kickbacks.

US charges 3 people, 3 firms in Iraq oil program

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Federal prosecutors in New York have charged three more people in connection with secret kickbacks in the U.N. oil-for-food program, the U.S. Attorney's office said on Friday.

They were Oscar S. Wyatt Jr., a Texas business executive and the former chairman of Coastal Corp.; Catalina del Socorro Miguel Fuentes, a Swiss business executive; and Mohammed Saidji, a Swiss business executive, prosecutors said in a statement.

2. heres some about wyatt.......
Oscar Wyatt's deal with the devil
The Times article notes the close relationship between Mr. Wyatt and Saddam:

Mr. Wyatt . . . traveled to Baghdad as recently as early 2003, as the United States was preparing for war, to meet with officials in Mr. Hussein's government. Mr. Wyatt - once called in Texas Monthly magazine "the most hated oilman in Texas" - met Mr. Hussein in 1972, just after Iraq's oil industry had been nationalized, and eventually became one of the biggest United States importers of Iraqi oil.

The two met again in 1990, after Iraq invaded Kuwait and Mr. Wyatt flew to Baghdad on a company jet to help negotiate the release of nearly two dozen American oil workers whom Mr. Hussein had turned into "human shields."

11. Oscar & Lynn Wyatt's political contributions will be dredged up.
They are reported to have donated over $500,000 to Democratic candidates and causes since 1997. David B. Chalmers, a principal of Bay Oil U.S.A. Inc. (and a Democratic contributor), was arrested in this case earlier this year. I'm not surprised that they were arrested (especially slimy Oscar), I'm just surprised that so few other Texas oilmen have not been nabbed. Know whut I mean, Vern?

If anyine screams about his love for the Democrats just throw that in their face. Not to mention his support for Nickles, Dole, McCain, Helms, Hutchison, Young Republicans etc etc etc.

3. So, the Bushbots carry on about UN corruption....and lo.....
...at this point at least 3 Texas oilmen are indicted for the crimes? Mr. Pot, meet Ms Kettle.
Seems to me if the US wants the UN to clean up its act, we might start the cleansing process right here at home.

4. The Man Who Bought the Oil From Iraq
http://www.stevequayle.com/News.alert/04_Global/04_Global_pics/041019.

HOUSTON, Oct. 18 - Billions of dollars of Iraqi oil had been sold under a United Nations program - and food and other goods bought with the proceeds - when Saddam Hussein decided in 2000 that he personally wanted a bigger cut of the action. Documents now suggest that at least one United States company acceded to that demand, paying surcharges that kept the oil flowing.

The action by the Coastal Corporation, which was founded by the Texas entrepreneur and oilman Oscar S. Wyatt Jr., is detailed in a formal Iraqi government tally of secret payments made from September 2000 to December 2003, when steps were taken by American and British officials to stop the surcharges.

<snip>

"He is still wheeling and dealing, going 90 miles an hour," said Bill Greehey, who worked for Mr. Wyatt in the 1960's and 1970's and, on occasion in the years since, had legal battles with him as chief executive of Valero Energy, a refining company in San Antonio. "He is not afraid of the devil."

Simon Romero reported from Houston for this article and Eric Lipton from Washington. Susan Sachs, in Istanbul, contributed reporting.

17. In a city full of rich, nasty, sorry, mean bastards
Oscar Wyatt sits proudly at the top. My brother worked for this guy in the '70s, and I don't think he's gotten over it yet.

Wyatt was chummy with Saddam before it was fashionable. He beat the Bushes and Rummy to that table by years. He's also shrewd as hell; he was one of the very first who noticed that Enron was employing questionable accounting prctices. He said of the company as far back as 1996 that "it looks fine going up, but it'll crumble like a house of cards when it falls..."

Oscar won't be able to buy his way out of this mess. They've got tape recordings with him discussing the details of the kickbacks -- who gets paid, how much and how. They've got faxes of the transactions.

Eighty-one years old, and if he lives long enough he's going to prison for awhile.

Houston's charities will be the biggest losers; they will suffer because http://216.109.125.130/search/cache?p=oscar+wyatt&sm=Yahoo%21+Search&toggle=1&ei=UTF-8&xargs=0&pstart=1&b=111&u=www.texasmonthly.com/mag/1999/dec/socialite.php&w=oscar+wyatt&d=Hk1FM2FULmE9&icp=1&.intl=us">his wife is the biggest ball-thrower -- make that fundraiser -- in Houston.

21. I was thinking the same thing....
she does give a good party.
I vaguelly remember there is a Sakowitz (or was it Finger's) connection. I remember some nasty society divorce. Hey in the wards they draw guns and the blood is spilled on the streets and the police blotter page. In River Oaks, they call Eli Lilly (promonent divorce attorney) and the blood is spilled in the court room and front page.
In Texas and in the oil biz in particular, there are many interesting and dangerous figures. Sometimes loosing your money or your business is the least of your worries.

22. Lynn Wyatt's maiden name is Sakowitz
This is a good book about them. Excerpt from the review:

At the core of the author's narrative is her account of how Wyatt attempted to wrest control of the Sakowitz business from Lynn's brother, Robert, whose ill-advised policies drove the corporation into bankruptcy. Also included: how Lynn's first husband--a drug-addicted exhibitionist--went to prison for killing a prostitute, was released, and disappeared; and how Lynn's son, Steve, has been photographed cavorting with the Duchess of York, provoking a tempest among the Windsors.

20. Some history on Wyatt and San Antonio/Austin
I remember this very well...

Oscar Wyatt, at age 65, is one of the richest, toughest,
shrewdest, most powerful, and ruthless oil barons in Texas. "Wyatt takes
a backseat to no one in the pantheon of takeover artists...remaining one
of the most successful men to set foot in the oil patch. He's also one
of the most despised" (Ivey 120).
Oscar Wyatt is also a brilliant, controversial, businessman, who
almost single handedly built the Coastal Corporation, of which he is
chairman and a substantial shareholder, into one of the largest energy
companies in Texas with assets of nine billion dollars" (Taylor 45). His
name" strikes fear in the heart of every pipeline executive," says
William Greehey, a formal Coastal official who now runs Valero Energy
Corporation. Wyatt just isn't tough on pipeline executives. "In the
early 1970's he cut off winter gas supplies to San Antonio and Austin,
igniting one of the nastiest legal fights in the states history. He has
sued the federal government, as well as numerous oil companies...also
when the Houston Chronicle compared him to J.R. Ewing of Dallas, Wyatt
sued the paper" (Ivey 120).

23. Oscar Wyatt is for Oscar Wyatt, but this is Bush payback
Bush has been angling towards charging Oscar for two years. He's been in bed with Saddam and others on oil matters for a long time, so now he gets charged criminally.

Bush Crime Family doing what it does.

Other U.S. companies included ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM), ChevronTexaco (NYSE: CVX), and the largest U.S. buyer of Iraqi oil, veteran Houston oil wildcatter Oscar Wyatt and his former company, Coastal Corp., now owned by El Paso Inc. (NYSE: EP). All are under investigation.

25. Houston Oil Man Charged in Oil for Food Probe

Houston oilman charged in oil-for-food probe

WASHINGTON -- Legendary Houston oilman Oscar Wyatt and two others have been accused of paying millions of dollars in illegal kickbacks to Saddam Hussein's regime.

Wyatt was arrested at his home in Houston this morning and appeared before a U.S. Magistrate Judge. He is scheduled to be arraigned next week in New York.

In the latest indictments to emerge from the ongoing investigation into the United Nations' oil-for-food program, a New York grand jury has accused Wyatt and two Swiss business executives of funneling cash to front companies and bank accounts controled by the Iraqi government.

"The oil-for-food program was designed to provide humanitarian relief to the Iraqi people; these defendants undermined those relief efforts to line their own pockets with oil profits," said Michael Garcia, U.S.
Attorney for the Southern District of New York, said in a prepared statement today.

Wyatt, the former chairman of what was once Coastal Corp., is also accused of conspiring with fellow Houston oilman David Chalmers of BayOil (USA), who was indicted on similar charges earlier this year.

Wyatt attorney Tony Canales declined immediate comment, saying his office was preparing a statement.

An attorney for BayOil declined to comment.

If convicted Wyatt and the other defendants could each face up to 62 years in prison. Prosecutors also hope to force the defendants to forfeit at least $1 billion in assets.

Am I completely stupid? It was only France getting kickbacks? Yeah right! If someone has their hand in the cookie jar, you can bet Texas oilmen or bushco or both have their hands in the cookie jar too.
