Gunman kills radical student leader in Philippines

An unidentified gunman shot dead a student leader of a state college in central Philippines Thursday, shortly after the country's Supreme Court vowed to render justice to hundreds of untouched cases of extrajudicial killings, reported the Philippine News Agency Friday.

The report quoted police in Legaspi, central Philippines, as saying the victim was Farly Alcantara, a 22-year-old student of Camarines Norte State College and a member of a radical student leaders' organization called the League of Filipino Students.

Police said the shooting took place as the victim and his companion were riding a motorcycle near the campus gate and a lone gunman suddenly blocked their way to fire at the victim at close range.

Local militant and leftwing groups said hundreds of activists, labor leaders and student leaders have been killed over the past several years and almost none of the cases has been solved.
