Source: Voice of Iraq

Duhuk, May 24, (VOI)- A military source from Iraq's Kurdistan region said on Thursday two Turkish warplanes violated Iraqi northern Kurdistan airspace near the borders with Turkey.

"Two Turkish warplanes violated today the Kurdistan region airspace for a distance of ten kilometers inside the Iraqi territories," the source, who asked not to be named, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).

The warplanes flew over Kurdish villages west of Zakho, the source added.
Meanwhile, local residents from villages on the borders with Turkey told VOI "12 artillery shells were fired from the Turkish territories onto the villages of Nazador and Gali Bazagha with no reports of casualties."

1. from yesterday: Turkish PM would back Iraq incursion after suicide bombing
Turkish PM would back Iraq incursion after suicide bombing by Hande Culpan
Thu May 24, 2:49 PM ET

ANKARA (AFP) - Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to support any Turkish military incursion in Iraq against Kurdish rebel bases there after a deadly suicide bombing in Ankara blamed on the militants.

Upping the pressure on its southern neighbour, Ankara urged Baghdad Thursday to act against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) holed up in in northern Iraq.

"We expect urgent and resolute measures," foreign ministry spokesman Levent Bilman told reporters shortly after reports of more violence with a landmine explosion attributed to the PKK killing six soldiers in the southeast.

Erdogan said late Wednesday his government would secure parliamentary authorisation if the army sought to conduct a cross-border operation targeting PKK bases.

6. For years the PKK has been sending terrorists into Turkey
I think the bombing of the shopping center in Ankara a few days ago might be the final straw

It won't matter if the U.S. doesn't want Turkey to go after the PKK, Turkey will do what it needs to do

This only amplifies our lack of understanding of the region, and another reason that the invasion of Iraq was such a disaster

4. Iraq's northern airspace is mostly Kurdish.
Anybody else think this might be a effort in persuasion in that the Iraqi Kurds expressed dissatisfaction with the proposed Oil Law and the fact that the law would allow foreigners to reap the financial benefits of Iraq's oil for years to come? Soon after such dissatisfaction was expressed, Erbil experienced the first terrorist bombing since, I believe, before 2005. Now, our NATO allies enter Iraqi airspace in the Kurdish section. Seems like a pretty hard sell!

Pulling my tin-foil hat tightly onto my head, did Dick Cheney communicate with Turkey on his recent trip to the region?

I asked about the possible retaliatory/persuasive nature of these events at the time of the bombing:

15. U.S. jets cross into Turkish airspace
ANKARA, Turkey - Two U.S. jets appear to have crossed into Turkish airspace over the border with Iraq inadvertently, a U.S. Embassy official said Monday, adding that the incursion was under investigation.

The Turkish military reported on its Web site Sunday that two F-16 jets roamed into the Turkish airspace for four minutes on Thursday, over the region of Uzumlu, in the province of Hakkari which borders Iraq. It said it had informed the Turkish Foreign Ministry of the violation and had asked it to take the appropriate steps.

A U.S. Embassy official, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with embassy rules, said U.S. authorities had immediately started an investigation.

"At this point, it appears to be an inadvertent crossing into Turkish airspace and we will take action as appropriate once the finding is complete," the official said. "We respect Turkish airspace, we have good relations with Turkey and take the issue very seriously."
