LONDON (AFP) - US prosecutors will not seek the death penalty for two British nationals detained at the controversial prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, British Attorney General Peter Goldsmith told the BBC.

"United States prosecutors will not seek the death penalty in relation to either of the two British nationals currently the subject of potential proceedings," Goldsmith said.

He was speaking from Washington after talks with US officials on the fate of British suspects held at the Cuba base.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites) signalled Sunday his willingness to let a US military commission try British citizens detained at Guantanamo, so long as its rules meet British standards and no death penalty is handed down.
