WASHINGTON, July 22 /U.S. Newswire/ -- In the wake of last week's partisan flap at the House Ways and Means Committee, House Democrats are heading into their August recess feeling emboldened to seek greater party unity, staff writers Hans Nichols and Alexander Bolton report in the July 23, 2003, issue of The Hill. The Democrats are charging that House Republican leaders have crossed the line when it comes to unacceptable partisanship, and say the GOP actions -- which included calling Capitol Police officers to control Democrats -- served as a tipping point for Democrats. House Democratic leaders also are urging Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) to create a bipartisan commission to look into last Friday's events.

So far, Hastert has rebuffed the request. But a Democratic leadership aide said Democrats would not drop their protest until the Speaker made an effort to find out precisely what happened last week.
"We are going to continue to ask for some sort of investigation," said the aide: "A bipartisan mechanism needs to be set up to interview people about what the facts are. If we let things lie as they are the chairman can call the police on people whenever he wants to."
