Bush oil price 'begging' is 'pathetic' : Clinton

Wed Jan 16, 1:56 AM ET

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (AFP) - Democratic White House hopeful Hillary Clinton on Tuesday accused President George W. Bush of "begging" for cuts in oil prices in "pathetic" encounters with Gulf leaders.

The former first lady hit out at the US president as he wrapped up a tour of the Middle East, during a 2008 Democratic presidential campaign debate here.

"President Bush is over in the Gulf now begging the Saudis and others to drop the price of oil," Clinton said. "How pathetic."

"We should have an energy policy right now, putting people to work in green collar jobs as a way to stave off the recession, moving us towards energy independence.".......

1. on this issue, I agree with Mrs. Clinton
The most powerful country in the world, begging some backwards monarch who thinks its fine and dandy for women to have to ask men for permission to go anywhere in the kingdom.

Isn't it time that we earmarked some money for developing the energy sources of the future...so we can tell these overindulged human scum to take their oil and shove it up their arse?

2. I completely agree with her on this one.
It was totally pathetic on Bush's part. The Saudis know he did not mean it but he was just pandering to the American people to make it look like he is trying to do something about our economy tanking. They have an unspoken agreement: They are out to make as much money on oil as they can. Period. Kudos to Clinton for pointing it out.

6. Yep -- and look for prices to go THROUGH THE ROOF this summer
The last hurrah for Exxon-Mobil's friend in the White House. Are you ready to be gouged?

The GOP's setup is to lay the blame at the Saudi's feet.

7. The refiners pumped up production to lower gas prices before the November 2004 election
...in Amerika. I expect them to try the same gimmick, but the US companies may not be successful because they lost control of the supply (Saudi &Russia control that).

I love Clinton's use of the words "begging" and "pathetic".

3. we need a FDR type energy program-put people to work-the laborers, the researchers,
the technians-make it huge.

Kerry had proposed something like this during his campaign 4 years ago--of course it went bust.

Hillary outlined such a program on more than one occasion last night. Something about a strategic energy fund (70 billion) dedicated to providing jobs and money for such alternative energy programs. She talked about cutting the subsidies to big oil and using those subsidies to fund such. It was quite detailed and progressive..Actually Hillary was very impressive last night. She said all the right things..

12. Hillary is absolutely right.
And Little Boots is about to find out he really has no friends in the Middle East, because the Saudis aren't going to do a thing to help him.

Bush is a pathetic, sorry excuse for a human being. Dumber than a box of rocks. An alcoholic who thinks he's God's gift to the world. In short, a scary man.

14. Oh please....
we are being treated to more of the corporate-state kabuki show, or have we all forgotten by now the now famous quote by moron* during the 2000 election regarding how he* was going to "jawbone the saudi's into lowering the prices", when they were at roughly 25 bucks a barrel.

we all know that moron* is pathetic, we all know that he's* in the saudi's and big oils pocket.

Her making this statement is nothing more that pointing out the obvious.

However, if she's out to promise that the price per barrel is going to come down during her "term" we are being treated to nothing more than recycled rhetoric.

Screaming and yelling over moron* and high oil prices will do nothing.

If she was really serious and I don't mean campaign serious, lol, she would layout a concrete proposal that would get us off of oil as our main energy source. But alas, that would take real guts.

In her $70 billion revitalization package for the nation, she only throws 5 billion for alternative fuels. LOLOLOL, that's nothing more than continuing with business as usual.

folks, corps and oil dictate what the candidates say.

15. Begging is too polite - groveling would be more accurate
The only purpose of the Mideast trip was for Bush to grovel at the feet of his true masters, the Saudi royal family. How much do you wanna bet that he brought up the fact that he allowed Saudis to leave the country after 9-11 and claimed that the Saudis owed him a favor?

16. Both sides should be severely condemned when it comes to energy
Politicians of both parties are disserving the American public when talking about our energy future. Both are being dishonest/disingenuous when it comes to the reality: too many people and too few clean sources available.

Reality: Windmills and solar are marginal extra sources. The whole country could be awash in them and the problem would still exist. There are no locales for dams. Any extra bio-mass sources (including ethanol, etc.) add to the CO2 climate change disaster. "Nuclear" still has the disposal and safety issues. There are some gains still to be made from insulation, but it has about reached the point of diminishing returns. The easy retrofits of buildings has already been accomplished.

People who think that this is going to be a free lunch are immature dreamers. Our politicians are pandering to them. Bottom line: energy is about to become rationed, and the energy enforcers are going to be imposing on your lifestyle and snooping around to make sure that you comply. Don't BS yourselves, and don't even try to bullshit me.

21. *ahem* I humbly disagree - hidden on your cable line up
is a show called "Eco-Tech" which shows innovations that are being used today. The wind power was excellent! The inventor totally changed how the blades look (a screw type, rather than blade type) that can either be installed vertically or horizontally, they capture all wind, they do not shear in high wind (there are a couple of building in Chicago that have this type of power). Guess who is buying his tech - Europe, Asia & South America.

It is innovated thinking as this gentleman has shown that we do have the know how NOW, it's just a matter of implementing them. All scientists say it is not ONE SOURCE, but a combination (depending on your microclimate) that is going to get us off the oil teat.

I have one problem with some of these eco-tech's - they are being bought up by Private Equity Firms, which means, like the car show, that they want to charge for a plug-in hybrid around $100k per car, which is absolutely ridiculous!

Our energy sources are too precious to sewn into a few hands (just like the oil corp's) and they are wanting to screw us again, because they want to make their quick money, charging the hell out this green tech's.

This should NOT be allowed - especially if the tech's were developed at our universities.

I highly highly recommend looking at Eco-Tech - what is out there will blow your mind. We've got some cool scientists in this country that have been plugging away, not paying attention to politics, actually working to solve the energy problems.

As an aside (take it with a grain of salt) Pluto is moving into Capricorn on 1/25/08. Do a search on the history of Pluto in Capricorn and see what inovations came out during these times. Pluto in Capricorn is when the American Revolution happened, and this is our first return into this alignment. It looks like some really good times will be happening in the next 24-37 years. It's getting the money men from the constant and chronic shakedown's that have to stop.

As always, YMMV

20. Is this the same George Bush who, while campaigning in 2000...
Is this the same George Bush who, while campaigning in 2000 (when oil was a mere $20.00/barrel) that he would "jaw-bone" the mid-east to reduce prices?

"Mr. Bush was critical of Al Gore in the 2000 campaign for being part of “the administration that's been in charge” while the “price of gasoline has gone steadily upward.” In December 1999, in the first Republican primary debate, Mr. Bush said President Clinton “must jawbone OPEC members to lower prices.”

22. I think it's

I think it's the same one who later said that we should not manipulate oil prices using the strategic petroleum reserve. And it's the same one who decided to fill the strategic petroleum reserve when oil was at record prices.

I ran across this blurb today.

Brazil's president drops in on Castro

Brazil's president met ailing Cuban leader Fidel Castro in a surprise ending to a 24-hour visit to Cuba during which he signed a deal to drill for oil in the Gulf of Mexico. The meeting between the left-wing leaders was private, according to a spokesman for President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
