Ex-Guantanamo inmate in Iraq suicide bombing: TV
Source: Reuters

DUBAI (Reuters) - A Kuwaiti man released from the U.S. prison in Guantanamo Bay in 2005 has carried out a suicide bombing in Iraq, his cousin told Al Arabiya television on Thursday.

A friend of Abdullah Saleh al-Ajmi in Iraq informed his family that Abdullah carried out the attack in Mosul, his cousin Salem told the Dubai-based television channel.

"We were shocked by the painful news we received this afternoon ... through a call from one of the friend's of martyr Abdullah in Iraq," said Salem al-Ajmi in a telephone interview aired by Arabiya.

He did not say when the suicide bombing happened.

Abdullah had been missing for two weeks and his family learned he left Kuwait illegally for Syria, he said. Abdullah had sent messages to his wife from Iraq.

Abdullah, 30, had a son after he was released from the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where the United States holds suspected terrorists, Salem said.

2. Chickens come home to roost. Blowback. Is it any wonder, McCain, that
we'll be fighting these people for 100, or 1.000 years?

4. I can barely wait for the Right Wing to start promoting this as the reason ...
... why no one should ever be released from Guantanimo Bay -- rather than the reality that Guantanimo and its tactics are the very things that inspire radicalism and terrorism.

6. You think that fellow had any hatred for America?
I would imagine he was not alone in his feelings either..He has friends and family and I am sure he has told them of his treatment at the hands of America..

7. Sorry,
but this f@%&er had a choice and he literally blew it.
Blowing yourself up on the street is a sure way to kill innocent civilians.
Do you recommend all people released after a wrongful conviction to go and blow themselves in courthouses, bus stations and farmers markets?
That will get them the support they need, right?

9. No, that's a strawman...

What we're saying is that the conditions that these inmates are being held under are actually causing, or at least strengthening, their hatred for America. Those who are rightfully convicted in American courts have no good reason to feel powerless and wronged, as those in Gitmo. That's why this is false proof for the right's arguments about not releasing these detainees.

10. If YOU were held by a foreign country in a prison camp
possibly caught in a random roundup by unscrupulous bounty hunters, without trial, without charges, no one able to tell if and when you'd ever get out, and undergoing constant interrogations about things you knew nothing about--don't you think you'd be a little peevish when you finally did get out? Would you have friendly feelings toward that country?

I'm not condoning suicide bombing, but people don't become suicide bombers unless they're angry.

I've never heard of anyone suicide bombing people they LIKED.

12. They are supposed to fight for the oppressed muslim mases.
Yet they kill and injure many more iraqis than coalition soldiers.
For all we know he just went to the closest market and blew a bunch of moms and their kids - at least thats what most of his friends do.
I truly hope he is in paradise now - virgin number 72 in somebody's harem.

14. Yes, I agree that it's not logical, but it's easy to see
how being held in captivity under those conditions could fill a person with illogical hatred.

15. I was thinking today
how much will it cost to make commercials with images of civilians injured and killed in suicide bombings and air them on the TV in the Middle East?
Sure as hell seems better approach than what we are doing right now.

18. Whatever you think of this guy....I would like to see you locked up,
tortured, etc., with no recourse for a couple of years only to be released with a "never mind", and see how "warm and fuzzy" you are feeling about the world in general and your "choices".

We turn people into lunatics and yet you seem to think he had a choice? He was turned into a fucking lunatic - that was our choice.

when he loses the election and becomes a suicide bomber. Blame the government of Vietnam, not him!

13. Guantanamo is the perfect Catch-22.
Does it contain terrorists or create terrorists?

I heard an interview with one of the British detainees who said that after all the abuse he was offered a job working for the intelligence agencies (it sounded quite ominous, it wasn't clear what exactly they wanted him to do).

17. Break people mentally & then send them back where they're easy prey ...
easy prey for terror recruiters.

Unless these people are going back to good jobs & safe communities, it's probably quite easy to convince them to become radical.

19. we really have no sure idea what they did and do to people in Guantanamo
for all we know the revelations so far are so fragmented and piecemeal, the reality there could well be a far worse situation than most realize. this is an administration that NEEDS shit blowing up. that has long been alleged to have secret teams PERPETRATING many of the suicide bombings that kill civilians in Iraq (thanks negroponte for doing the whole death squad thing again). terror is like oxygen to them. Ever hear the phrase conditioning? Now a story just out that they're going to see to it that the place is closed up tight by the time bush leaves office. they're going to scrub that place clean.
