Wendy's incoming CEO says employees should expect job cuts

The Associated Press May 12, 2008, 7:08PM ET

DUBLIN, Ohio

The incoming CEO of Ohio-based Wendy's says employees of the nation's third-largest hamburger chain should expect job cuts.

Roland Smith is the chief executive of Atlanta-based Triarc Companies Inc., which is acquiring Wendy's in an all-stock deal worth about $2.34 billion.

Triarc owns Arby's shaved roast beef sandwich restaurants. Under the deal, Wendy's International Inc. will continue to be based in the Columbus suburb of Dublin. Smith will be CEO of both brands.

In a letter to Wendy's employees on Monday, Smith says job cuts will happen as the company examines ways to become more efficient.

1. Yes, more job loss. However...
I worked at Wendy's corporate (marketing division) for a few years, and let me just say it's the bastion of corporate waste.

It was just the far more than I had ever personally witnessed.

Craziness like $50-80K for newly redecorated offices for every VP/SVP that came in. Plus a redo after so many years of service. I witnessed 5 office remodels in my short time there. Assistants used to pick up dry cleaning and babysit (that barely even knew how to use computers - so they used other assistants to help with that). Managers that pushed all their work on to assistants or analysts while they just took off, etc, etc, etc. My boss (VP) was in such shock, that after a few years of trying to fix the backwards way they did things - he gave up and ended up an EVP elsewhere. It was so stifling as well - I think the motto was "Nothing Ever Changes" & "This is how it's always been done". :banghead:

6. Well, nothing would trickle down from corporate to franchise employees
But I have no doubt even corporate owned stores don't trickle much either. When I left corporate, I took a job with a 40+% pay increase.

you live in Ohio? I'm in Westerville, moved here from Dublin (Ohio). so Wendy's Marketing Dept. is not a great place? I always wondered. I've spent most of my years in various Limited Divisions; marketing departments.....

I lived in New Albany & North of Polaris when I was there. I interviewed for BBW when I decided to leave Wendy's, but decided on another company (loved the gift basket they sent me though). To try to describe it - LTD is like an iPod, and Wendy's - kind of like an 8 track player :rofl:

11. ha ha! Love the analogy...
I'm at BBW now....was trying to get back into Victoria's Secret, but I pretty much like where I am and what I'm doing right now...and happy to have work in this economy!!!!

12. Yeah - thinks were starting to tank when I relocated.
I had just been downsized (last to go), and found a job in Chicago in a little over a week afterwards. Two weeks later, I was packed an on my way. I knew there was no chance of finding anything reliable back there at the time, without taking a cut in pay.

BBW seemed like a great place to work. I often wondered how things would be different today, if I would have accepted their offer instead. In the end, I think things worked out pretty good - mostly because I met my DH shortly after moving here.

I eat lunch at, there are so few left. I know that sounds nasty, but at least I sometimes can get what I ordered.

Plus I have forgotten the Spanish I took in high school and college, so everything I hear sounds like "spit on the Gringo's bun" to me.

It's not like they're offshoring... I mean they probably are wasting quite a bit. The Franchises will still run independently :shrug:

14. Businesses in and around Columbus OH should TAKE NOTE!
Janitorial service (sounds sort of like the new bride as royalty) is headed south as a big-name player in this service just sold out the whole territory and has released all the long-time liaison sales/customer service/training and operation mgrs between corporate and their bit-player franchisees. ALL OF THEM...Now's the right time to pitch a b*&ch if your johns are dirty, your floors unvacumed, your shelves dusty, your baskets overflowing...just saying, look into a new vendor ASAP!
