E. coli scare prompts beef recall in 11 states
Source: AP

May 18, 2008

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- A Chicago-based company is recalling beef products distributed in 11 states because of possible E. coli contamination, federal officials say.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Friday that no illnesses have been reported from the meat, produced by JSM Meat Holdings Co. The agency was uncertain how much meat is being recalled.

The meat being recalled is used in ground beef products. Included are 30-pound and 60-pound boxes and 47-gallon barrels of "MORREALE MEAT" beef products.

The products have the number "EST. 6872" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The products have 15 different labels including, "Boneless Chucks," "Boneless Clods," "Flat Rounds," "Gooseneck Rounds" and "Knuckle."

A message left for a company spokesman after business hours wasn't immediately returned.

The states affected are Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

E. coli, a potentially deadly bacteria, can cause diarrhea, dehydration and kidney failure.

1. I believe Bush recently said beef does not need to be inspected agressively, did he not?
Asshole Bush always part of the problem, never solving one.

5. E-coli problems are usually from GROUND beef.
Edited on Sun May-18-08 07:40 PM by bulloney
The bacteria is from feces making contact with the carcass. E-coli is killed when cooked. If there is any E-coli on a steak, the contact with the flame/skillet will usually kill it because the bacteria is on the surface of the steak.

With ground beef, the meat in contact with the E-coli can be in the center of the burger patty, meaning it has to be at a minimum temperature throughout the entire piece of meat. That's why they discourage people from eating burgers that are even a little pink inside.

4. I had to google to of those :-)
Clods are shoulder steaks and gooseneck rounds are rump roasts, whole cuts of beef. Sounds like everything was contaminated. :puke:

8. Another reason why I buy only local meat.
I want to know where my meat's from. We get out bison from a local ranch, this year's Easter lamb from a local farm, and the chicken we do eat is from a local place, too. That way, I can track them down if we get sick. The bison and the lamb are processed by a local butcher, and they keep things super-clean. All the small local farmers trust them, and I've never heard of a problem. They aren't putting animals through on an assembly line but instead working on one animal at a time. There's a big difference.

10. We've been doing the same...
buying locally. The meat is much fresher and if we get sick, I know where it came from. It all comes from a farm in Ohio.

11. As more people feel the financial pinch
...more are turning to cheaper meats at the supermarket. And there will be more pressure for those that provide cheap meats to provide more, and keep it cheap.

And more will get sick when producers cut corners. :(
