Many Florida Jews Express Doubts on Obama
Source: NYT

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — At the Aberdeen Golf and Country Club on Sunday, the fountains were burbling, the man-made lakes were shining, and Shirley Weitz and Ruth Grossman were debating why Jews in this gated neighborhood of airy retirement homes feel so much trepidation about Senator Barack Obama.

“The people here, liberal people, will not vote for Obama because of his attitude towards Israel,” Ms. Weitz, 83, said, lingering over brunch. “They’re going to vote for McCain,” she said. Ms. Grossman, 80, agreed with her friend’s conclusion, but not her reasoning.

“They’ll pick on the minister thing, they’ll pick on the wife, but the major issue is color,” she said, quietly fingering a coffee cup. Ms. Grossman said she was thinking of voting for Mr. Obama, who is leading in the delegate count for the nomination, as was Ms. Weitz.

But Ms. Grossman does not tell the neighbors. “I keep my mouth shut,” she said.

1. Well- if the Democrats are smart and start using the soundbites of Hagee
and agressively show Obama's consistant support of Israel, and once Obama starts to campaign more agressively in person, I think some- but not all-- will come around. Remember there were also a large group of Jewish voters who supported both Bushes and also Nixon for the very same reasons- fear and ignorance.

29. huh?
The whole point of this was that Israel doesn't matter, and the person was saying that a lot of people won't vote for Obama because they're god damned racists. What is wrong that it's becoming impossible to state the obvious in the media? Our country is cock-full of racist pieces of shit. We know it, but we don't say it. The person quoted here had the guts to say it.

4. They need to sing THIS version of Hava Nagila. It'll make them feel better:
Edited on Thu May-22-08 07:23 AM by DFW
Sung to the tune of Hava Nagila, so if you don't know it, you're outta luck.

1.)
Barack Obama, Barack Obama, Barack Obama
Fights the G O P.
Barack Obama, Barack Obama, Barack Obama
Speaks well on TV

He has a health care plan,
Might try a weapons ban,
Would leave Afghanistan
If he only could

Get us out of Iraq
Bring all our soldiers back
That’s what would please Barack
And he really should!

He-Will-Not-Stand-For-Those
Made-up lies by fake Swiftboaters
He connects with most swing voters
He respects our institutions
Plays it straight with contributions
He’s the man!
Yes he can!
Vote Obama in the fall!

2.)
Barack Obama, Barack Obama, Barack Obama
Won’t bash Hillary
Barack Obama, Barack Obama, Barack Obama
Plays it cool, you see

He sure can give a speech
Won’t use the word “impeach,”
And there’s no need to teach:
He knows “wrong” from “Wright.”

He does not lose his head
Even in states so red
“Live from New York,” he said
“It is Saturday Night!”

There-Will-Be-Lots-More-Since
This is an ongoing story
Listen to his oratory
What he says is quite convincing
Look at John McCain, he’s wincing
Now Barack
Leads the pack!
Vote Obama in the fall!

Written by yours truly, so you better BELIEVE this was used by permission LOL!!
(Submitted to The Freedom Toast for recording--we'll see!)

58. I call it rhyming within the scan.
This was for fun, and not a political statement looking for a challenge,
for Pete's sake! For the record, back when I was pretty much tossing a
coin when it was time to send in an absentee ballot (I vote in Texas, in
case that wasn't obvious), I ended up casting my vote for Sen. Clinton. But
she got her song 2 years ago on the Freedom Toast "Sing Along With The
Democrats" CD, and we had only done "Barack the Knife" up to now, where the
Clintons had gotten plenty of songs.

Most of the songs on "Campaign 2008," if you had bothered to check them out,
were all done from the point of view of the candidates themselves, the big
exception being McCain, who did not fare well, because TFT doesn't think much
of him.

Lighten up a bit! It's not forbidden by ANY of the DU rules, I'm pretty sure.

66. I didn't know either!
I just used a phonetic spelling and hoped for the best.
Allan Sherman's lyrics were the best ever for the time
he wrote it ("Harvey and Shiela"), and I know no Hebrew,
so I have idea what the original text says.

But whatever text you use, it IS a catchy tune, and I have
no solution for getting it out of your head, sorry!

If The Freedom Toast ever gets around to recording it, I'll
post a link (they're thinking about it).

I tend to agree. The first serious black Presidential candidate is gonna catch some hell. Thank God for millions of open minded white voters, or we wouldn't even be talking about Obama right now, no doubt about it. His race should not be factor, but it is. Obama is a great candidate, as qualified as McCain and Hillary, he should be president. Not because he's black, but because he has the best ideas, and he's a change from the current nightmare.

21. How sad. These people are profoundly, pathetically ignorant.
Some would let our country go down the toilet simply because they hold to the very mistaken notion that Israel's interest would be protected if they elect a fascist to the presidency, and in doing so appear to be more loyal to Israel than the US.

And some would vote to elect a fascist to the presidency simply because the opposing candidate has a different colored skin than they do.

This is so very wrong, and deeply disturbing, considering the racist ideology that led to the suffering and death of so many innocent people in Europe not long ago.

62. Don't buy into this! I've seen enough corporate 'news' monopoly anecdotal writing
to know that it is highly selective and highly manipulative. You can find anyone in a big enough crowd to mouth the crap that you are trying to peddle. It's a classic disinformation technique. A few old idiots do not make an entire race idiotically vote against their own interests and beliefs. WHEN have Jewish voters EVER abandoned the Democratic Party? WHEN have they EVER exhibited racism in their voting? They have, on the contrary, been among the biggest supporters of racial equality in our country! And they have consistently, always, voted progressive, in big numbers. Furthermore, Jewish VOTERS have not bought into NeoConism (Israel's survival requires U.S. warmongering), and many Jewish thinkers understand what a "con" it has been (and what a danger to Israel!). Some of their leaders have bought into it, like the leaders of a lot of other groups, including many of the leaders of the Democratic Party! That is a general problem of our corrupt political establishment, not a problem that has been caused by, or in any way manifested by, ordinary Jewish voters. Like I said, there are a few idiots in every big crowd, and the corporate 'news' monopolies will find them, if they have some obnoxious psyops item they want to plant in our brains. Jewish voters hate blacks. Black voters hate whites. White voters hate blacks, browns and Jews. White women voters hate black men. And on and on and on.

STOP REACTING. That's the first step. Read between the lines, second step. Understand war profiteering corporate 'news' monopoly techniques and--very important--motives. And heed the lessons! WHO was one of the MAJOR sellers of the Iraq War? The NYT! WHO suppressed Bush's massive domestic spying to help Bush-Cheney get re-elected in 2004? The NYT! What interest do they have in the failure of a non-warmongering candidate?

Resist corporate media "divide and conquer" tactics!

71. I understand. I'm not buying into anything. My post was in reference to
the individuals that apparently made these ignorant and/or racist comments.

A few Rabbis may want to consider taking these individuals to the woodshed for a little talk and maybe some schooling in current affairs, as well as European history.

69. I like how they introduced the
"black criminal" red herring. Some relative of mine was mugged by a black man therefore I won't vote for a black man. It makes your head spin. If a "mainstream" newspaper printed antisemitic drivel like that it would be shut down. Imagine the outrage if an elderly black woman said that she bought a sham mortgage from a Jewish man, therefore she couldn't vote Lieberman.

The brazenness of this slur is what is most galling.

How many 84 year old white christians who live in the south want to see "seperate but equal" reinstated, think that a womans place is in the home, and fill their purses with buffet items?

One old Jew does not speak for American Jewry.

Who gives a shit what this woman says.

We probably won't carry FL because it has a majority of old people and rednecks. This is the same state that's always in the the news for doing wierd RW kooky BS.

This whole article is just MSM sensationalism.

Edited on Sat May-24-08 04:11 AM by fujiyama
Didn't Kerry receive well over 75% of Jewish voters?

I don't understand why Obama should have such a tough time, other than the Wright problem. I'm actually stunned such a large number are buying into this crap. Oh well, I think Obama will have a tough time in FL anyways. It's obvious younger Jews aren't buying into the nonsense. That's reassuring.

I think the rift between the communities is ridiculous and so unfortunate. A majority of Jews are quite liberal and many supported civil rights...And I don't think Obama's stance on Israel will be significantly different from Hillary's.

30. Surprise, surprise. They aren't Democrats...they are aristocrats.
This is such bullshit. These wealthy Jews, living in a closed community don't give a rat's ass about Democratic values or ideals. They are out to cover their investments and stock folders.

I see the same shit from my older siblings. They grew up Democrat, and they reaped the benefits of the Democratic ideals, but now that they are in their 70's, they all turn repug to do whatever it takes to protect their nest eggs. Pathetic human beings is what they are. "Screw the rest of the world...I want to do what I think will protect my gold." Damned to hell.

I would suggest Obama write them off. They are nothing but worthless human carcusses that couldn't be won over by Democratic values and a black man to boot no matter what you do for them. They are greedy sons-of-bitches...each and every one of them.

Amen.

51. That's stereotyping retired Jewish people in FL, isn't it? Lots of retirees there aren't wealthy...
they're living off their life savings - the results of 50 years or more of saving and investing and working hard. Hardly wealthy.

But even for the ones that are wealthy...there is nothing wrong with being wealthy. We'd all like more money, wouldn't we? Nothin' wrong with being compensated well for working hard an entire lifetime and learning how to do or be something that most others won't or can't do. That's how you get wealthy.

More than being Jewish....THEY'RE NEW YORKERS, Hillary's "home state #2." I think that's more to the point.

It would be interesting to see a poll break down Obama/McCain support based on age.

No offense to the older DUers here, but I think a lot of your peers may still harbor some old racial attitudes when compared to the general population.

This is of course speculation, but I see it anecdotally in some of the older folks I know, including my own mother.

As to Ms. Grossman's comment on her Florida retiree neighbors, Obama is only half black, so I guess they're only half racist.

Now THAT'S progress.

33. Any Democrat who says they are liberal, and end up voting for mccain is a liar or idiot
or both

Most Jews in this country will vote for the Democratic nominee, which will be Obama

Robert Wexler, a highly regarded Democratic Congressman in Florida is not only Jewish, but was one of the first to jump on board for Obama, and declare that his support as a Super Delegate goes to Obama

I am not from Florida, but as a Jew, and knowing other Jews know MOST Jewish Americans WILL VOTE FOR OBAMA when his nomination is official

The repukes have been trying to divide the Jews against Obama based on lies and distortion, it won't work

60. Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Was there anything scientific in this NYT crap?
I don't click on NYT articles (--have never forgiven them for Judith Miller), but carefully selected anecdotes are a classic disinformation technique. We're getting all kinds of "divide and conquer" bullshit from the corporate 'news' monopolies right now. Is this just more of it? I suspect so. Anybody read the whole thing? They provide any justification--opinion poll? voting stats? Jews not voting for black candidates?--for this article? Or is it just the horseshit I think it is?

103. I agree. Like the "white working class" "problem" that turns out not to be aproblem....
this, too, seems to be hyped up.

Every politician has groups that they do better than others with, and groups that they do worse with. Obama, Clinton, and McCain all have issues with various groups, and are favored with various groups.

The problem with FL may in part be the elderly Jewish, for Obama. But Dems have a problem with FL to begin with, and FL has a lot of transplanted New Yorkers. Most transplant New Yorkers are going to vote for their home state senator, of course.

Obama has no big problem with working class whites, either. It turns out it is a geographical problem and that he gets working class whites in other areas. Clinton has problems with certain geographical areas, too. As does McCain.

Obama should, however, make his case to the Jewish population, to clarify where he stands on Israel, in case there is any doubt. The Dems want to keep the Jewish vote, I'm sure.
