21. I know, but it feels like this drama about the seat has been
going on for so long. There's been enough time for him to make his choice and he should have been ready to announce as soon as Hillary was confirmed.

33. I don't believe this is about uncle Ted. He has his own family . Two sons
and a daughter, including one son currently in Congress. He also has a lovely wife and many other nieces and nephews, many involved in public service and not expected to give up their jobs.

I think this is about her low poll numbers and the majority of NYers indicating they prefer Cuomo as well as the women's groups backing Mahoney.

I think she wanted to spare both Paterson and herself the discomfort of his not nominating her.
I never really thought she actually wanted the job and was either running to please Teddy or for other reasons and I think she decided it wasn't worth it. JMHO.

7. link here:
sorry the only link so far is from the NYPost
http://www.nypost.com/seven/01212009/news/politics/caroline_kennedy_ends_senate_seat_bid_151234.htm

Caroline Kennedy has told Gov. David Paterson that she is withdrawing her name from consideration to replace outgoing Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in the U.S. Senate, The Post has learned.

Kennedy cited "personal reasons," according to sources.

Her stunning move comes as sources revealed that Paterson had intended to appoint her to the now-vacant seat today.

The 51-year-old Camelot daughter's decision removes the highest-profile name in the ring to step into Clinton's seat, as she departs after getting confirmed as President Obama's Secretary of State today.

19. There was a look on her face yesterday...
Edited on Wed Jan-21-09 07:34 PM by Baby Snooks
I had noticed a look on her face yesterday. A sadness. Others noticed it as well. An out of place sadness.

Perhaps she realized you cannot go from a private life to a public life and retain the private life. Which obviously she thought you could.

We all have our places in life. That was really the problem with Princess Diana. She was raised an aristocrat and had become a commoner and couldn't possibly have gone back to being an aristocrat.

The "people's princess" sounded nice but in reality she had become one of the people and couldn't possibly become a princess.

In a way, Caroline is a princess and couldn't possibly become one of the people. Which she was trying to do.

32. Interesting take
I don't think I agree on the commoner vs.aristocrat angle, but I do think she realized that she was unprepared for a public life, especially under these particular circumstances. Yes, Hillary carpetbagged but she ran and NY'ers voted for her. Perhaps she will put together a good team and run in '10. It would shut everyone up and it's not that far off. I's even possible that TPTB who wanted her in have made an arrangement that would put a rollover candidate in place now.

10. We just couldn't have any incoming Democrats whose priorities are to help the little guys.
Senators Kennedy & Byrd are hanging in there for the time being, but senators like Feingold, Boxer, etc., should watch their backs in these corporation-friendly times.

Caroline Kennedy withdraws her name from consideration for Hillary Clinton's Senate seat

By KENNETH LOVETT
Daily News Albany Bureau Chief

Updated Wednesday, January 21st 2009, 7:39 PM

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2009/01/21/2009-01-21_caroline_kennedy_withdraws_her_name_from.html

ALBANY - Caroline Kennedy has withdrawn her name from consideration for the U.S. Senate seat vacated Wednesday by newly confirmed Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The surprise announcement late Wednesday came as Gov. Paterson was set to make his selection.

Kennedy was considered the front-runner for the position, though in recent days upstate Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand's name has surfaced as a serious possibility.

Kennedy first threw her name into the ring about six weeks ago. But she endured a rough public rollout, including an ill-received upstate swing and a round of heavily criticized media interviews.

25. Good. Now let her go out of her secure condo
let her travel to upstate New York to meet regular folks. Let her listen to what regular people have on their mind, get out among people and then, like Hillary, start campaigning. Perhaps you could win in 2010, on your own merit.

39. Yes, and that would be totally fine. Being appointed this way, however, never seemed right to me.
At least, not without having earned a separate public office by popular vote.
