Thousands of tarballs wash ashore in Pensacola Beach
Source: ABC-15 TV

PENSACOLA BEACH, Fla. - Thousands of tarballs are washing up on Pensacola Beach, Escambia County officials confirmed Friday morning.
Escambia Emergency Operations spokeswoman Sonya Daniel said, "We do have tarballs on the beach. Clean-up crews have been dispatched from Unified Command to clean them up."

Buck Lee, the director of the Santa Rosa Island Authority which governs Penscola Beach said, "This is what we've been afraid of and here it is."
ABC Action (News) reporter Don Germaise said he found thousands of the round globs lining the shore of the pristine beach.

.....

Doug Sullivan, a tourist from Missouri said "It's gross and it's only beginning. Imagine what its going to be like in a few days."

BP says some oil is flowing up a pipe from the now-capped well on the floor of the Gulf of Mexico. But it's unclear how much is being captured.

1. Um, I think it should be "clear" how much is coming up
pipe, by how much is going into the tanker. Jeez! This tells me one thing....not much oil being captured.

4. Pensacola's white beaches are being destroyed right in front of our eyes!
They reminded me of Varadero Beach in Cuba.

8. Blobs of oil tar stain Florida national seashore
Forbes reports:

June 4, 2010

GULF ISLANDS NATIONAL SEASHORE, Fla. -- Gooey blobs of oil tar are washing ashore in growing numbers on the white-sand beaches of Gulf Islands National Seashore as a slick from the BP spill approaches the Florida Panhandle.

County emergency officials reported that spotters who had been seeing a few tar balls in recent days found a substantially larger number early Friday along the national park shore and nearby beaches.

The park is a long string of connected barrier islands near Pensacola.

Keith Wilkins from Escambia County emergency management said tar patties were are pretty thick on parts of the beach, as much as one every foot.

.....

And this is just the beginning for Florida.

Was it worth it, Cheney, you God-forsaken murderous creep?

18. Went to Pensacola Jr college after I got out of the Army...
Drove down from Columbus, Georgia in 1993. It was truly a beatiful town. Some VERY happy memories, many of them on those beautiful beaches. I'm so saddened by this, I just can't tell you. Now I'm in Arizona - we got problems here too.

13. Florida’s Escambia County spokesman called the impact minor
http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-06-04/floridians-brace-for-worst-as-oil-clumps-hit-pensacola-beach.html

June 4 (Bloomberg) -- Floridians found Frisbee-sized oil clumps along Pensacola Beach today, as the state braced for damage to its tourism and fishing industries from the BP Plc oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

About 120 people were working to clean up “hundreds, maybe thousands” of tar balls and “tar mats,” flat clumps of oil as long as one foot (30 centimeters), that washed ashore overnight, Daniel Akerman, a spokesman for Florida’s Escambia County, said in an interview. He called the impact minor and said the beach remains open...

16. I lived in Pensacola years ago
My mother worked in the Naval Air Station there. It was the first time that I ever saw white sand that kind of looked like snow at the water's edge. All I can say is that the sadness in me is profound and painful. We're losing a treasure right before our eyes and there's not a damn thing we can do about it.
