Clinton Warns Of Likely Iranian 'Stunt' Ahead Of UN Sanctions vote
Source: AFP

By Lachlan Carmichael (AFP) – 2 hours ago

WASHINGTON — US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Sunday she expects Iran will "pull some stunt in the next couple of days" as a UN vote on tough sanctions against Tehran over its nuclear program looms.

Asked what she expects in the runup to a UN Security Council vote on sanctions on Tehran over its controversial nuclear program, Clinton said "I expect Iran to pull some stunt in the next couple of days."

Iran has in the past taken steps to "avoid being held accountable," Clinton told reporters as she waited to depart on a Latin American trip.

"I don't think anybody should be surprised if they (Iran) try to divert attention once again from the unity within the Security Council," the top US diplomat said.

"I think we'll see Iran say ...'wait a minute, wait a minute look at what we're going to do' in a bid to thwart sanctions," Clinton added. "They've consistently tried to avoid being held accountable."

1. If only we were so dedicated to holding our allies accountable...

For shit that they have actually done.

Guess we're still out for revenge against the Iranians. With a healthy dash of islamophobia to spice it all up.

9. Why does H. Clinton hate Iran so much?
My sister is the same, its because she is an educated woman!
You can't have a conversation with her on Iran, she just pulls out slogans.
Of course she is not Secretary of State but they both forget that women in Saudi don't even have the right to drive.
But talking to women...

10. There are reasons to dislike Iran, particularly the current regime.
But I see little justification for condemning Iran whilst defending Israel and Saudi Arabia.

21. You have to be kidding!
There are plenty of men shouting for sanctions. There are others itching to bomb Iran. Does Dick Cheney's name ring a bell? You make a lot of inference from 2 educated women. Frankly that is a pitifully small sample.

5. Like joining the rest of the international community and demanding an end to the Gaza blockade?
The problem the US has with this vote is lately Israel is making Iran look downright reasonable.

I can't really remember of anyone in an administration, " warning " of some sort of stunt.

20. I wonder if there will be a resurfacing of the Turkey/Brazil/ Iran agreement
The "unity within in the Security Council" is true if you mean the 5 permanent members, but Brazil and Turkey are included in the Security Council. http://www.un.org/sc/members.asp

What is true is that they likely have the nine votes needed. They likely have 12. The three they could lose are Turkey, Brazil, and Lebanon, who want more diplomacy first. Given the flotilla incident, where the US stood with Israel, how will it look in the Middle East if the world's big powers impose sanctions on Iran, with the only two "neighbors" voting no? I thought they were likely to push back the vote given the flotilla, but is seems that speculation was wrong.
