NC governor and dog toughen animal cruelty laws

Greensboro, NC-- A Greensboro dog is making a big change in animal cruelty laws. Wednesday, June 23, Governor Bev Perdue signed 'Susie's' Law.

The bill was named after Susie, a dog in Greensboro, who was found beat and burned in a park last Summer. The law will increase penalties for cases involving animal cruelty.

Animal cruelty charges involving torture, mutilation, starvation or disfigurement of an animal will be a felony under the new law.

In the past two month Susie has made trips to Raleigh to meet members of the Senate and House.

Governor Perdue signed the law around 1:30 pm Wednesday at the Governor's Mansion.

1. What a precious pup...
I am heartened to see animal cruelty laws strengthened. There are few acts that can be more repulsive than abusing an animal or child.

2. About damn time. Wait...disfigurement? So declawing, ear-cropping, tail docking
etc fall under this rule too? I'd LOVE that.

8. All of those should be illegal
And the AKC should be discouraging the mutilation and disfigurement of dogs!

11. They do not do that in the UK. If you ever watch Crufts, youwill see all the
breeds that are cut, docked and trimmed in the US are shown in their "natural" condition over there.

4. Good
Animal cruelty laws need to be much stricter and their punishments much harsher. It's a joke how light some of them are.

10. This should be a worldwide campaign. Animal cruelty is totally inexcusable.under ANY circumstances

Considering the already studied and verified potential for future unspeakable crimes by those that perpetrate animal cruelty, anyone who does this should be sent to prison..for decades.... PERIOD.

I would support a law that stipulated that whatever was done to the abused animal should be done to the perpetrator....no exceptions.
