US hostage will be 'spared'
"THE Iraqi group holding a US hostage has agreed not to kill him, Mezher Dulaimi, a self-described Iraqi mediator, said today.

Dulaimi, who heads an Iraqi human rights group, said the affair of the missing American had been settled, and he was in good health.

Earlier, Qatar-based satellite TV station Al-Jazeera screened a video showing a man in civilian clothes, and presented as Thomas Hamill, a US national held hostage."

1. Even though...
Even though I think this guy made a terrible choice trying to get out of his screwed up financial situation by participating in the war - I am thankful and glad that this is ending peacefully.

The man gets to go home - probably traumatized for life.

The Iraqis that took him hostage do not have to have blood on their hands.

And the Iraqis also further debunk the myth that they are 'savages'

I'm mainly happy for his family.

2. I'm glad to hear that :)
I hope he gets his tail back here ASAP and gives up on the war games. He's a lucky guy.

4. It's a good thing this is over
1. Anymore killing should be rejected by all.

2. Media attention can be refocused on bush 9/11 & failure of Iraq policy instead of on this sensational media event.

6. Hope Hamill will gain a late-blooming sense of respect
for human beings and learns he really doesn't want to go to their country and kill them, or prepare the way for others to slaughter them.

Hope his destiny will bring him face to face with some maturity and wisdom which will transform him.

8. I'm not so sure about that...
... but I hope what you suggest comes to pass. I have to wonder. however, if any potential lessons will soon fade in the face of all the money this man is likely to be looking at for the made-for-TV movie and other appearances.

Look, I'm also glad this former dairy farmer from rural Mississippi -- who only took this job to get his family out of debt -- will be returned safe to his loved ones. But from what I've seen of other American POWs from this war the experience seems to have taught them precious little in way of the lessons you mentioned.
